William NORTH convict Wiltshire
« on: Sunday 10 November 13 21:54 GMT (UK) »
I have recently received two files with regard to William's indictment and disposal and would like a little information on the places and dates mentioned in them
ASS125/18/18 INDICTMENT FILES
William North late of the parish of Imber labourer in the County of  Wilts in the fourth year of the reign of George the Fourth
What year was the fourth year of George IV
Would the mention of the Parish of Imber mean that he was living there at the time or that he was born there?
HO9/8 HULK REGISTERS
Leviathan Hulk
Received from Fisherton 1 June 1824
Age 20 (would have been born about 1804)
When and where convicted 13 March New Sarum
Where was Fisherton and New Sarum

I have William's NSW convict records

Any help would be appreciated

Geo 3 died 29/1/1820
So Geo 4 reigned 29 January 1820 - death 26 June 1830 ?

"New Sarum" = Salisbury ?

Thanks Ray for that information.  He must have been indicted in 1824.  They were in a hurry to get rid of him.  He was convicted of horse stealing and arrived in NSW in 1825 on the convict ship Asia

I have done a little research and found that Fisherton was the Gaol that people to be transported were held.  Imber village is abandoned and both are around Salisbury.  Haven't found anything on New Sarum

New Sarum is Salisbury, and Imber was not  so much abandoned, more that  the inhabitants where ejected from their homes so that the military could use it for a training ground. http://www.pinterest.com/chazahrayne/the-lost-village-imber-village-wiltshire-uk/

Thank you to everyone who replied.  It is more than I could have hoped for. I now know where the places mention are and what a wonderful resource old newspapers are. These were serious crimes and in a money sense would have been quite a lot of money.  I suspect that there were others where he wasn't caught.  From his NSW records he was transported for Life. He took his second chance, married, had children and died in 1869 age 66.
Thanks again
