William Melanthon Sanders - off to Australia??
« on: Sunday 10 November 13 22:42 GMT (UK) »
Hi All
I am doing a family tree for a friend which is proving V interesting as she is connected to some V wealthy families!!  She is Descended from William Melanthon Sanders who is born in Surrey in 1829.
Sometime after 1841 he disappears and reappears in the 1871 census with two children - William Melanthon JNR (1857) and Godfrey Thomas (186o ish) both born in Aus.  His Wife Clarissa is born in Sussex so they were probably married before leaving the UK.  (still searching for this)
Has anyone an idea of what records I need to search to find out if he was maybe deported??  Or if he just went for business.  He becomes a successful Farmer so I think he will have made money out there.

Many thanks
Karen

There's plenty of fantastic live links via RChat's Australia Resources Board, and the child boards for each of the states and territories.

Re convicts

Transportation of convicts to NSW (including was is now Qld and Vic) effectively ceased 1840, to Tasmania effectively ceased 1853ish and Western Australia was only for a short time anyway in the 1850s and 1860s.

None transported to South Australia.

William Melancth Sanders and Clarissa Parsons  19 Feb 1853

This seems to match the NSW BDM sighting by Giblet

Well found Giblet  ;D

 - Clara Sanders, who appears to be another child, appears on the census as b. Gawler - so South Australia?

http://www.genealogysa.org.au/resources/online-databases.html
SA births -
Clara Sanders, 1854 (Adelaide)
William Melancthorn Sanders, 1856 (Barossa)
Godfrey Thomas Sanders, 1859 (Port Gawler)

Also there seem to be family papers at the Surrey History Centre
http://www1.surreycc.gov.uk/shssearch/content/search.asp?mode=search&page=4083
Quote
William Melancthon Sanders (d.1909), malster, merchant and farmer and descendants: papers incl letters from New South Wales, Australia, 1851-55, account books, school reports of son William M Sanders junior at Holmesdale House School, Reigate

I doubt he was deported or anything of the sort - he could have come back to look after family (there seem to be various relatives living with them in 1881) or have made his money and then decided that he'd rather be in England after all.

Well it turned out that William Melancthon left for Aus after falling out with his Step-Father who appears to have mis-managed the family estate

Thanks all
