Best way to confirm identity
« on: Monday 11 November 13 23:14 GMT (UK) »
Hello, I am researching my paternal line and would like to know the best way to confirm identities of family members. My great, great grandfather was (I believe) Harry Tempest Bentley born in 1868 in E. Yorkshire. Research indicates his father was Tempest Bentley born in 1830.

Hi

The best way is to work backward from your parents and grandparents, using censuses and certificates to confirm parents.

You are lucky with a name like that, there appears to be only one in the censuses. In 1881 Harry Tempest Bentley is with him, so it is the correct man.  Piece: 4771 Folio: 32 Page: 10

Here's Henry Tempest Bentley's birth registration, that would confirm his father and give his mother's maiden name.

Looks as if Tempest Green Bentley married twice

BENTLEY, Tempest Green
Sculcoates   Yorkshire
1859  Jan-Feb-Mar
Volume   9D Page   230

Either Mary Jane Haigh or Charlotte Pope

Then

BENTLEY, Tempest Green
Sculcoates Yorkshire
1867  Jul-Aug-Sep
Volume  9D Page n 209

Bride Jane Tennison. This must have been Harry's mother
