Brickwall - Markham area Billiald
« on: Wednesday 13 November 13 04:48 GMT (UK) »
I have a variety of records from the MSS-cat Collection from the University of Nottingham that have my presumed Billiald / Billiard / Billyard ancestors.   But before I exert more energy searching and start requesting look ups, I need advice from those of you close to the region who do the lookups....

Land foeffment and church business records tell me the Billialds were in the West and East Markham area as early as 1590's and they continued to live in the immediate area, evidently for several generations (according to christening records from familysearch.com)  Besides East and West Markham, a group lived in Fledborough over the same time span.

Can I assume these Billiald's are related?  (The surname is quite rare, is it not?)

My list of Billiald males at this time includes given name, location, christening year OR marriage year and/or spouse.  I can tell in some cases who are brothers as children but cannot distinguish them once they had sons of their own.

If several men were having sons and those sons stayed in the same area and had families, is there any way I can sort them out and find a direct line to my known ancestors?  It seems each man of a particular time frame or generation had sons that he named William, Thomas, Richard, Nathaniel, etc. and these same names were also used by (what I 'assume') that man's brother(s).

I realize I need to work back from my known ancestors one generation at a time, but is it realistic I will be able to eventually sort them out?!

Many thanks for advice or just an opinion!

Lynn

39 baptisms in Fledborough
3 male marriage
12 female marriage
19 burials.
The baptism records for instance,
 Fledborough
18-7-1692 Richard dau of Nathaniell BILLIALD and Mary (Yes it does say daughter!)
With a possible marriage  at Marnham
21-4-1691 Nathaniel BILLYALD and Mary Lilly.
And a possible burial at Fledborough
21-1-1757 Mary BILYARD notes wife of Nathaniel.

I have the same problem with my surname. Quite rare but all the sons named William, John and George. I have managed, on the whole, to sort them out. A few are just left in my tree with a note to the effect that I cannot and I have not traced the line any further.

Thank you so much for quick replies!  I live in Colorado so it is wonderful to have input from you all!

My list of Billiald males is a good start and since I don't want to request random record look ups I will spend some time working on batching the births into groups by years working back from my GGGrandfather William Billyard born 1818 in East Markham.  I think I have a rough idea of a line from him to Richard Billiald born ~1754.  I am waiting for William's marriage information that I ordered to confirm his father's name and resolve questions about William's age when he immigrated to America.

Gratefully,
Lynn

Larkspur,
Thanks for the Samuel Bilyard and Mary Booth details!  Can you please give me your source so I can note that on my family tree?  Can you determine the name of Samuel Bilyard's father from his marriage?

I am surprised to see the BILYARD spelling, as we thought that spelling change occurred later than Samuel's generation!  The name morphed from BILLIALD to BILLIARD then  some to BILLYARD and BILYARD (for my group that immigrated into Illinois around 1864.)  William's name was spelled BYLIARD on a New York 1860 census but for his Naturalization papers it was BILYARD, same as his marriage record.  BYLIARD was a very recent discovery.  His years in New York were a complete mystery until I found that census record.

The older records I referred to in my original question from the MSS-cat of University of Nottingham had earlier spelling of BILLIALD with "[BILLIARD]" following in some cases.  The same was done for LITTLE MARKHAM [EAST MARKHAM], etc.

I do appreciate your help!!

Lynn

My source is the Nottinghamshire Family History marriage Parish register Cd.
It sadly does not give parent information.
East Markham was known as Great Markham and West Markham as Markham Clinton.
As I have found with my paternal surname, the spelling does not matter at all. I have discovered at least 15 different ways mine was  written. It only became permanent with my grandfather who  was born in 1903.
I cannot find a baptism for a Samuel B. in 1780 +- 10 years.
There is one for Mary Booth
East Markham
25 Dec 1789 dau of William and Susanna Booth abode EM father a labourer.
Marriage EM
23 Feb 1789 William Booth and Susanna Markham.
