Nazareth House Industrial School for Girls St. Machar
« on: Monday 18 November 13 12:41 GMT (UK) »
Think I have found two "lost" girls, age 12 and 13, who seem to have been sent from Glasgow to Nazareth House Industrial School in Aberdeen (in 1911 census).  Their father is back in Glasgow living with his own original family and has his youngest child a boy age 8 with him.  The mother seems to have totally disappeared after about 1903 - can't find death, nor anywhere in 1911 census.  I am mystified that the girls were sent to Aberdeen, as there was no known Aberdeen connection with the family.  (The mother was born in 1877 in Ireland).
Is it too much to hope  that there might be any records available for Nazareth House?  Would they have been sent there via a "Poor Law Application" type of order?  Any ideas anyone?

Try using the search facility here to look up "Nazareth". There was at least one previous posting about this.

Maggbill, the most likely place to search for poor relief records for the family would be in Glasgow (Mitchell Library) which is a good thing as the records for the area are great  :) These searches can only be done in person.

Thanks everyone for the input.  I posted my question late last night, and after closing down had a closer look at the Aberdeen "Nazareth House" census page where these two young girls appear.  Out of 35 young girls there is not a single one, who was born in Aberdeen!  Big percentage of them born in Glasgow, Edinburgh etc.  So, it was obviously a common thing for the children "at risk"? to be sent such distances.  I remember when I was a child in Scotland, travelling from Glasgow to Edinburgh was the event of a lifetime - so to go to Aberdeen - without parents - to what was basically an Orphanage? must have been so traumatic.  Being a Glaswegian myself with an Aberdonian husband, I could even say there might have been a language difficulty!! lol.

Anyway, - I am presuming I may have to look for some Poor Law Relief Applications (have found the Glasgow Archives people at Mitchell Library to be very helpful before via email - I am in Australia, so an actual visit to the "Mitchell" is a dream of mine )...
Will also try the London Nazareth House connection.. though again - might have to find an email or website for them..  Will also check out previous "Nazareth House" postings.

Several towns have a "Nazareth House".  They're run by Catholic nuns and I think you'll find that the Aberdeen Nazareth House was originally an orphanage where children had lost either both or one parent.  Little girls were taught how to sew and launder and the boys were taught a trade.

Years ago I was trying to discover whether a 10 year old boy was in a Welsh industrial school and discovered that some children from all parts of Britain were sent to a church run orphanage in London and from there little groups of about ten were sent across the oceans on ships "for a better start in life".  Can't recall his name now but one man used to organise everything and accompany them to their destination.

The abuse at Nazareth was well documented and is on the web. The London address is where the Aberdeen records were when the court case(s) was in session.
