Several towns have a "Nazareth House". They're run by Catholic nuns and I think you'll find that the Aberdeen Nazareth House was originally an orphanage where children had lost either both or one parent. Little girls were taught how to sew and launder and the boys were taught a trade.
Years ago I was trying to discover whether a 10 year old boy was in a Welsh industrial school and discovered that some children from all parts of Britain were sent to a church run orphanage in London and from there little groups of about ten were sent across the oceans on ships "for a better start in life". Can't recall his name now but one man used to organise everything and accompany them to their destination.
