Whilst the index doesn't include the age at that time, the actual certificate almost certainly will.

Oh that's very interesting.  Somebody else here mentions an 1839 burial, an infant age 11, so that is not my James Hayter.  However, that is interesting to know, in case other likely death registrations turn up for me.  Many thanks indeed.

Out of interest, what do you know for certain about YOUR James Hayter?
Also, where did you get the c.1762 birth year from? Often when people have an approx DoB it's from a death (which you obviously don't have) or from census, but I can't find one that calculates to a 1762 birth (some near misses, but you specifically say 1762)

My apologies, I am not being specific enough.  The earliest verified record I have is the marriage of William Hayter to Maria Nutley in Micheldever 2 Aug 1815.  Anything earlier than that is simply the suggestion of the Ancestry website.  Those suggestions give me a guideline to search back earlier, but of course I cannot take anything straight from somebody else's Ancestry tree without verifying it.

James Hayter is suggested as William Hayter's father, and his DoB is suggested only as about 1762.  Somebody once evidently researched that, but without knowing their sources, I cannot take it as fact.  I cannot even verify William's birth or baptism yet, as none appeared in Micheldever, though a couple of others appeared elsewhere in Hampshire, a 1785 one appearing most likely.  This is what I should be verifying first.

My intention was to wait till after Christmas, and purchase some of the Hampshire parish records on CD, which I saw advertised somewhere.  I suppose that is the best way to verify any leads I have.

Hi

You are probably aware that William and Maria are still alive and kicking in the 1841 and 1851 Census

William says he was born Micheldever but no trace of him there but several possibilities in nearby villages.

A Baptism at Micheldever
22AUG1790  MARIA NUTLEY d/o JESSE & SARAH

I can't find a Marriage for J&S but these Burials at Micheldever
5DEC1822  JESSE NUTLEY  76
21JUL1823  SARAH NUTLEY  72

...and Maria was a widow living in alms houses at Winchester in 1861

Many thanks, I have those.  I think the next step is to buy the Hampshire parish records on CD.  I saw them online somewhere, I have to find them.

These appear to be William & Maria's children, all baptised in Micheldever

Charles  bp 24 Mar 1816
Ann bp 3 May 1818
George  bp 10 May 1821
Eliza  bp 28 Mar 1824
William bp 29 Mar 1829
Maria bp 15 Mar 1835

No James which I would sort of expect if William's father was James.  :-\

Have a look here for the Hampshire GS CDs:

There are various purchase options.

That's the link I was looking for, thanks.  I had it, and then I lost it.  I might work my way through some of those CDs, and see what I find.  Has anyone used them?  Thanks again.
