James Hayter death 1839
« on: Thursday 28 November 13 21:47 GMT (UK) »
Quick question please, probably a stupid one.

A death appears for James Hayter in Stockbridge in 1839.  No age is given.  I assume this means that ages were not recorded with these early registrations?

My 4th great grandfather appears to be James Hayter born about 1762.  This might well be his death.  It might also be anyone else, an infant, even.

Surely without the age, these early death registrations woud be rendered not much use for genealogical purposes?  Has anyone made use of these early death registrations?

Many thanks.

The GRO index does not show ages for death registrations until the mid-late 1860's so yes - it does make it difficult.

You are dependant on finding burial entries in parish registers to determine ages

Hi again, if your James Hayter  was b c 1762ish he would be c 80 in 1841 census, are you certain he did not die much earlier?

The 1827 burial is for an infant.  No age for the 1802 burial.

Whilst the index doesn't include the age at that time, the actual certificate almost certainly will.
