Putney Vale Cemetery, Wandsworth, Surrey
« on: Saturday 30 November 13 00:00 GMT (UK) »
I'm new to this site so if this message is in the wrong spot please let me know.

Does anyone live near Putney Vale Cemetery in Wandsworth, Surrey?  Would you be able to look someone up for me?

My husband's grandmother, Nellie Chambers, and her sister, Rose Chambers, emigrated to Canada in 1907 as Home Children when their father was killed in an accident at the Nine Elms Goods Yard.  Both girls grew up, married and had families of their own and things worked out reasonably well for them.  We have been able discover a lot about their family in England but have never been able to find out what eventually happened to their mother, Emma Chambers.  I have a couple of death certificates but they are not the right Emma.  It is surprising how many 'Emma Chambers' there were.   I have found a listing in Family Search for an Emma Chambers who was buried November 14, 1925 in Putney Vale.  I am wondering if there might be any other information in the burial record at the cemetery that might help us in determining if this is our Emma.

Advice or assistance would be appreciated.

Hi Carole

Rose Chambers was born June 27, 1895, Wandsworth
Nellie Chambers was born Nov. 11, 1897, Wandsworth

Rose would have been about 12 and Nellie about 10.

Their father was George Bennett (George and Emma weren't married) and he died May 20, 1905.  He was run over by a rail car.

Hi Carole

I wish it was that easy!  However, I have a family photograph that we have dated to around 1914/1915 and Emma is the central figure.

That blows that theory then.  What I can't understand is if Emma was still alive after George died - why were the girls sent to Canada.  It makes sense if she pre-deceased George

I have re-checked the 1901 and there is another Emma Bennett in that age range living in the Wandsworth registration district married to James - and coincidentally with a daughter Nellie

Is the photo dated and does it specifically say it is Emma in it?

Who is in the photo?  If it includes Nellie & Rose it must be pre-1907 unless Emma went to Canada as well.

Hi uplander

Have you tried contacting Putney Vale directly and ask what help they can give as you have the full name and date of burial but live abroad and a personal visit or overseas payment isn't an easy option?
