Elisabeth Alida van Schaik
« on: Saturday 30 November 13 18:50 GMT (UK) »
My great-grandmother married merchant mariner John Mason (born about 1873) in march 1922 in Birkenhead. At the time they both lived in Wallasey. She left her two children behind in Amsterdam, where she was born in 1886. I have not been able to find any information about John and Elisabeth apart from their marriage certificate. They must have died somewhere, or left the country, or... John's father was a master mariner named William.

Hi Jeanet

Is this couple a coincidence, I wonder?

Travel In 1957 (by Air I think)
Jack Leonard MASON , British Passport 853152
Alida Elisabeth MASON-STOPPELMANN, Netherlands Passport, D-489579
Arrived 24 April 1957 in New York (from Genoa), First Class, (Liberian T.S.S. Olympia 321)

Regards 'your' John MASON, was he a bachelor on the marriage certificate?

Also, what were their address' on the certificate and the witness' to the marriage?

Cheers

Hi Ambly,

Yes, John Mason was a bachelor. He married Elisabeth the 23rd of March 1922 by license. He was 48, she 36 and a spinster (although she had two children back in Holland, John Mason's?). He was a mariner, her profession isn't mentioned. He lived 12 Massey park and she in 25 Poole Road, both in Wallasey. Present at the marriage were Thomas C. Davies and Mrs. R. J. Davies. Registrar was David Movice and superintendent registrar S.R. Carter.

Kind regards,
Jeanet

An Elizabeth A. Mason died in the Birkenhead area in 1931 aged 46 (freebmd.rootsweb.com) - could be her?  (freebmd seems to have her spelt Elizabeth on the index as well).
