I will try to list things on a time line
1848 Major W Colless born
1886 '                '      marries his cousin Mary Colless
1897          "              Dies  at Normanton Qld of Dengue fever

Ruth Herald Stowe marries Henry Welldreck 1876 but leaves Henry in 1880. This was noted in a court appearence when Henry took Ruth to Court after Ruth had taken Henry to Court.{No bearing on this}

Birth certificate 1884/33286 details
28 October 1884  at Lady Bowen Hospital Ann St Brisbane a son Major Colless Bowen.
Father Henry Welldreck, labourer 37 years born in Germany Married 3 October 1876 Singleton NSW. Living children-Clarence 7, Harold Henry 6 Walter James 4, Dead one female
Mother Ruth Herrald formally Stowe 27 years born at sea
Father not present

The family lived in Patrick Plains This birth in Qld.
Patrick Plains is not that far from Come by Chance where Major William Colless was born and he does not get married until 1886. On hearsay it states he sold his share of CBC to his brother and went to Normanton and purchased Inverleigh, came back to NSW after nearly 2 years and married Mary in 1886. Most Colless family trees have Major Bowen Colless as the son of Major.
I only noticed this "slip" when I was double checking the tree. He is my husband's grandfather.

Incidentally, did you notice that son Harold appears to have changed his name to Wilson?  (Marriage 1911, WWI records and death 1960 - death lists mother as Ruth Stowe and WWI lists birth as Singleton, so I'm reasonably sure this is the right man).  Any Wilson connections in the family?

DNA testing would work if you are in contact with male line descendants of both Major Colless Bowen and of a son of Major W. with wife Mary.  Then yDNA might prove the connection. Another thing to check might be the probate records of Major W - did Ruth or any of her children get a mention?

A third avenue of enquiry would be the birth and death of the little girl who died - Daisy M M, b. 1882 NSW d. 1883 Queensland - the death in particular might give you an idea of where Ruth was when she first moved to Queensland - perhaps working for Major W or in service with another family in the region.

Just a little New South Wales geography. I could be wrong, but! Come By Chance is in between Coonamble NSW and Walgett NSW and Wee Waa NSW in an area known as The Pilliga. Patricks Plains is an old name for the Singleton Region of NSW. The areas as you said "Close" but "are actually not close at all" particularly in those days. But instead on what was once a stock route from Northern NSW and Queensland. Now called the Kamilaroi Highway.
