FARBROTHERS of Great Rollright
« on: Sunday 15 December 13 17:37 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if anyone has access to the parish registers or equivalent, as I am trying to find out anything about my g-g- grandmother Leah FA(I)RBROTHER(S), born Great Rollright circa 1810-1812.  She is on the 1851 census in Snowshill Glos as (her married name) Leah Jennings, age 39.
I understand the Fairbrothers name can also appear as FATHERS.

If anyone can trace a baptism, parents' names, any siblings etc that would be much appreciated.

Cant find much else, so I do not think they were from that part of Oxfordshire or even any part of Oxfordshire - more likely from over the boarder.
There is a burial of a Robert Fairbrothers aged 77 on 1 Nov 1822 who just might be William 's dad?

There is a banns entry and subsequent marriage for a Mary ARIS in Great Rollright on 18 Feb 1781 - she could be Sarah's aunt or even a sister? The marriage took place on 5 March 1781 the groom was John Whiting, and both were otp

Other wise there are no other entries for ARIS or spelling variants.

and........

There is an entry for the marriage of Ann FAIRBROTHER to John Gardiner on 3 Dec 1804

In the baptisms 1810 -1887 there are 48 baptism entries for FAIRBROTHERS which start with Leah and end in 1878

In burials 1813 -1935 there are 22 FAIRBROTHERS entries

In marriages 18113 -1837 there are 35 FAIRBROTHERS

So I reckon you may do well to get the Oxfordshire Family History CD - OXF CN03 and sort through them yourself?

Let me know if you have specific names or dates?

John,

I can add a bit more to the other replies today.

The Oxford Family History Society records show a number of presumed siblings for Leah, all recorded with the surname FATHERS and children of John and Margaret baptised in Great Rollright: Ann in 1782; Mary in 1785; John in 1787; John [again] in 1789; Willliam in 1796; Elizabeth in 1799; Thomas in 1802; and Sarah in 1804.

I can find no trace of a marriage in Oxfordshire between John FATHERS/ FAIRBROTHERS and a Margaret. There is a burial record at Great Rollright for John FAIRBROTHERS on 28 September 1832, aged 71, who could well be Leah's father. There is a baptism record at Great Rollright for John FATHERS, son of George and Elizabeth on 7 March 1762, which could also be the same chap.

Looking through the Great Rollright records, I also spotted the baptism at Great Rollright on 24 February 1830 of Sarah FAIRBROTHERS, the illegitimate daughter of Leah, a servant.

I hope all this is helpful.

Where did you get the information that the family name may be recorded as Fathers please?

Leah was a witness at her daughter Sarah's wedding in Great Rollright on 26 Sept 1831. Sarah married John HALFORD of Batsford, Gloucestershire after Banns. The 2nd witness was William Larence

Hi again

Ok, so here is the answer to your queries, it just takes a while to search the databases thoroughly rather than just looking at quick lists!!

John Farbrother B 1762 Great Rollright  s o George and Elizabeth. Bapt St Andrews Church, Great Rollright - 7 March 1762 (last name entered as Fathers)
D 27 Sept 1832 Great Rollright Buried 28 Sept 1832

He married his FIRST wife Margaret RAYER 3 Oct 1781 at Upper Slaughter Gloucestershire and they had 4 issue;
Ann 1782 Bapt 7 Aug 1782  - entered in PR's as Fathers
Mary 1785 Bapt 22 May 1785 - as above
John 1787 Bapt 30 Oct 1788 - as above - Died 1788 Buried 17 Aug 1788 - name as above
John 1789 Bapt 11 Oct 1789 - as above
Margaret died at Great Rollright on 19 March 1791 and was buried there 20 March 1791, in the PR's she is entered as Margaret Fathers.

John then re married by License to Margaret FRENCH at St Marys Church, Banbury on 20 June 1795 where it says he was a widower and from Great Rollright. She was a spinster of Banbury. James OSBORN was the only witness entered.

These two had 6 issue; NOTE death dates NOT corroborated!!!

William 1796 Bapt privately 26 June recd in church 21 August - entered as Fathers - D -1860
Elizabeth 1799 Bapt 13 Oct 1799 name as above - D 1871
Thomas 1802 Bapt 4 April 1802 - name as above - D 1841
Sarah 1804 Bapt 22 April 1804 - name as above - D 1853
Jesse 1807 - 1867 - this was in my notes but I cannot find a baptism to corroborate it - so it needs checking further
Leah 1811 Bapt 19 May recd into church 21 July 1811 -D 1878

There is another interesting baptism entry on 25 March 1796 for a John Fathers son of John Fathers and Jenny FRY - I have no idea who these 3 people are?

There that's better don't you think?

Nigel and Simon, thanks for the information.  It gets confusing when the first and second wife were both Margaret.  I found someone's Ancestry tree with two Margarets and two Leahs and Fairbrothers alias Fathers (seems a bit like Featherstonehaugh alias Fanshaw), couldn't tell what to accept as fact.   Jesse featured prominently there if I remember right.

Thanks for the marriages and siblings, and the daughter Sarah and her marriage.  Not sure what your reference to Mary ARIS relates to however.

I may do as you suggest and get the relevant FHS CD, if I decide to pursue this line further.
