Origins of my UK ancestors
« on: Monday 16 December 13 17:06 GMT (UK) »
Hi all.  This is my first time at roostchat.com. Looking for suggestions for a project I am working on.  Many of my maternal ancestors came to what is now the United States in the 1600s.  I want to mark a map of the UK with the origins of these ancestors.  For some I have found enough documentation to record the information, but some have no information regarding where they came from or I have found other people stating they were from a few different locations.  What would be a good way to determine the location my ancestors came from?  Most are listed as being from England, but I've also seen Wales and Scotland, oh and probably Northern Ireland.  Anyone need anything from this side of the pond?  Macki

I would store my ancestral info on Google earth. You can export overlays and so archive them to a safe offline location.

For the United Kingdom, you will find Bing Maps useful as they have an "Ordnance Survey View" option that will give you names of local places as well as road names etc. I have attached a sample (partial)  image.

I have found Rootschatter to be the most helpful genealogical community around. It is a resource to be treasured. You will find it useful to make your Subjects as informative as possible as this will draw the attention of those most likely to be of assistance.

For instance:

NOT "Looking for my uncle"

TRY "John Doe, Anyville, Dorset, c 1789"
or
TRY "Where is PITY ME in Durham?"

I wish you good luck in your research.

Bardouleau: London - in memory of my stepmother Annie Rose née Bardouleau who put up with a lot from me.

You need to be careful when using online maps- ones like the above example are probably protected by copyright and website terms and conditions and thus not allowed under Rootschat policy.

Thanks Aghadowey,

I did think carefully before pasting a snippet. However, I thought it would be acceptable as it promotes an official and thus, I presume, paid for use of OS data. Nevertheless a valid point well made.

Thank you for the suggestions and copy write warning.  I've purchased a map, so I don't need that.  I will be working on the project over the holidays and wanted to have an idea of where to start.
