What is a Golden Albert?
« on: Tuesday 17 December 13 21:45 GMT (UK) »
Earlier this year, I spent a lot of time researching family history in Wales and came across a rather interesting character who lived in Wrexham named Samuel Lloyd. Samuel would have been my 4xGreat-Aunts husband and he lived from 1861 to some time in the 1920's. Whilst not a blood relative, I was intrigued by his musical career and involvement with local brass bands in the Wrexham area as I also share these interests. One of my main objectives has been to try and find scores for the music he composed back in about 1900. I found out about these through newspaper articles on findmypast and I have emailed Wrexham museum and still awaiting a response.

The other interesting thing I found in one of the articles, detailed a theft at his hotel in Wrexham which says that he had a 'Golden Albert' stolen. I am assuming that this is some kind of award which was named after Queen Victoria's consort; Prince Albert, however I am curious to know why he might have had it and whether it could have been for his musical successes. Does anyone know whether there are any records detailing who these might have been awarded to, for what reason and when?

Thanks!

Henning

Hi, it is more than likely an "Albert Chain" made out of gold, used to hang a watch from.
Regards,
Frank.

Ps, sorry, just replied at same time as Nanny Jan.

They usually appear in the window of jewellers who sell second hand gold, and prices vary dependent on the finess of the gold; 9 carat being cheaper than 18 cheaper than 22 etc. All astonomical prices though.

I was fortunate to pick up a silver albert that was still attached to an old broken watch,  I had spotted the albert and knew what they normally went for. Was also able to make use of the old watch case.
