Does anyone recognise this monument?

It has come from a friend's mum's photo album,we think it's WW1 ,but have no idea where ,or who ,it is!

Many thanks for any suggestions.

Hi Carol

I think it's Robert The Bruce, Stirling Castle

So it is Gadget  ;D thank you very much.

We did suspect it might have been taken in Scotland, but we don't know who or why yet!

The soldier looks as if he's in one of the Scottish regiments by his cap/trews.  Do you have any Scottish ancestors?

I think the steps have been barricaded to stop people getting to near/climbing up.

My friend married a Scot (Edinburgh) but this is HIS mum's album, not hers.
Hence him not having a clue who this chap is.

I will put that to him,he has a whole album full of really old photo's.
One of them has 3 photo's all the same on different pages with 3 different place name captions LOL
