George Tate and Ursula Grey
« on: Friday 20 December 13 16:40 GMT (UK) »
Hi!
Can anyone help with the following?

I have a George Tate marrying Ursula Grey on 5 June 1728 at Morpeth (on the marriage she is recorded as Ursaley Grey). They had:

Margaret Tate baptised 24 May 1729 Morpeth

Joseph Tate baptised 16 March 1732 Morpeth

George Tate baptised 16 Spetember 1733 Morpeth

James Tate baptised 30 May 1734 Morpeth

Isabell Tate baptised 14 July 1737 Morpeth

Isabell Tate baptised 15 July 1739 Morpeth

I believe Ursula Grey to be that baptised on 11 May 1707 at Felton, daughter of Ralph Grey and Jane Grant who married on 28 July 1706 at Felton?

Any help with George's parentage or that of Ursula much appreciated! :)

Hi

Unless your George and/or Ursula were
a) rich/landed
b) criminal
c) newsworthy in some way
d) appearing in the parish chest records, for poverty payouts etc.
you have little chance of finding more at the beginning of the 18th century.

He might appear on the Militia List of 1762 but he was possibly getting a bit old to be included. That might give his occupation and a clue of other records to search.

Morpeth was a big parish back then, covering not just the town but outlying agricultural areas. You do not seem to know where he lived or his occupation. Did you get your marriage and baptism information from the IGI or the Morpeth parish registers? Do you have their burials?

George had such a common name, that's another reason to be worried. If you find a George Tate, how will you know he is yours?

Sorry to be the bearer of non-glad tidings but you are well back in the archives for this couple, many do not even get this far.

All the best

A point that would concern me slightly is that none of their children are named Jane or Ralph.   People usually stuck to family names, not always of course, but I would expect one to appear.   Grey/Gray is very common in that area too.
