Ashton Under Lyne Barracks in 1861 censu
« on: Monday 23 December 13 07:27 GMT (UK) »
Does any one know if this barracks was unoccupied at the time of the 1861 census ?

The census itself appears to contain just fourteen people, a Barracks Serjeant, a Sutler and a Librarian plus their families.

No soldiers at all.

If it was occupied, are there no census returns  ?

Thanks for any help

Hi Anthony

You may have this - http://www.tameside.gov.uk/museumsgalleries/mom/history/ladysmith

It seems the Volunteers also used these barracks in this period. If so they were probably in their individual homes on census night. You would normally expect the Barrack Sergeant to be included in the same return as any Regular soldiers in the barracks.

Two regiments were allocated to 'Manchester' in 1861. The 11th Hussars were in Hulme and Preston, and the 84th Foot were in Regent Road, Salford, with a detachment in Stockport.

Thanks very much for this prompt response.

I have transcribed all the inhabitants of this Barracks in each of the censues from 1851-1911 (It wasn't built in 1841) and I was a bit surprised that there was no one there in 1861. U thought that the returns might have been elsewhere

Thanks again
