Kidlington - Look-up

Hello,

Sarah Taunt/Tant died in Kidlington in 1849, could someone please tell me the date of her burial and her age at burial. She married Joseph Taunt in 1810 and I'd love to know if they had any children born in Kidlington.

Unfortunately there is no date, just 1849 at St Mary Kidlington aged 61.

She is 52 on 1841 census.

Joseph is still in Kidlington in 1851.  HO 107 1730 420 27, as a widower.

Looking at 1851, for Taunts bn Kidlington, there only seems to be Joseph , who is still there, and a Michael who isa year younger than Joseph and living in Poplar - highly possibly a brother to Joseph.

So any children of Joseph and Sarah were either mistranscribed and not found under Taunt, or had died before 1851, or were not born Kidlington

There is a William Taunt on 1851, bn Kidlington ( indexed Ridington,hence I missed him before) , age 35 living in Birmingham with wife Susan and son William age 11.

So he could be a child of Jospeh and Sarah

That might be this William, the age is right and the fact his son is William.

Good find, can rule him out as a possible son for Joseph then.

When/where did Joseph die? If he left a will it might give details of any offspring.

Wow, speedy work everyone and much appreciated. I'm beginning to think that Joseph and Sarah were childless as he does leave a will but mentions no one else except his second wife. Thanks very much for the all the info!

Don't necessarily rule out him having had offspring with his first wife, he might have already made provision for them in other ways, help with land purchase, gifts of household items if his second wife had all these etc. so no need to mention them in his will.  He may have done this prior to his second marriage in order to protect their inheritance should he predecease his second wife.

I've come across both instances in my ancestors which caused no end of bother until documentation was found setting these gifts out.  In one family the younger children from his first marriage lived with him and their stepmother along with her two children from her previous marriage and two subsequent half siblings of this marriage and all of these were mentioned in his will, no mention of the eldest four children who I knew existed from parish records.  I eventually found a legal document drawn up shortly before his second marriage in which the eldest two sons were given farms and the eldest two daughters all manner of household goods, chattels and monies hence all four being omitted from the will. In another family all the children from the first marriage were provided for and were of an age where they were independent, not needing to live with and be brought up by their step mother.  The only children mentioned in the chap's will were the child he had with his second wife and small provisions for her two children from her earlier marriage. It was fortunate that legal documents charting these gifts were found otherwise all manner of questions would have been left unanswered.

Very true Artifis, I too have come across this before and it does cause no end of headaches!! It's more to do with the fact that I can't find any children for them and I have no reason to believe they lived anywhere else except Kidlington. It's always possible they did and I know in this game it's always wise to keep an open mind about things.
