If you live in Australia then go to the State Library of Tasmania site.  On the right-hand side you will find the word  genealogy (in red).  Left click on genealogy then right-hand side again scroll down and you'll find Births in Tasmania
              Marriages in Tasmania
              Deaths in Tasmania
These are all prior to 1900.  Left click will take you to the appropriate page.  It's fairly self-explanatory from there.  Use the the year and the registration number to locate the entry.
Some give a lot of information.  If you have problems then get back to me and I'll look them up for you.  You can download to USB.
You can also access Wills on this site for free.

Thanks all for your help...

I think I have got the family right now....  Nellie Browne is married to W.H.L. Wolter (or Walter) and he is my husband's Great Uncle...   I have been trying to finish some of the holes in her family...
One of the only things I haven't been able to trace is a marriage for them... Wonder if they married in Victoria given that Nellie is from Vic. although they lived in Sydney....

Did you get the information you required?  I am new to RootsChat and have not been able to work out the date year of your enquiry - I assume it was Dec 2015.

As to the Barnards I am a direct descendant and have a great deal of information on the family which I am currently compiling in self publishing book form. I am also a direct descendant of the Brownes you are enquiring about.

In brief ...
James Barnard (24 June 1810 - 20 Apl 1897) m. 6 Nov 1838, Charlotte Fox (1 Aug 1814 - 21 Dec 1898)
James Barnard was the first Government Printer of Tasmania
They had 8 children of which 4 died at birth or early childhood
Number 5 was James Barnard (22 Nov 1847 - 1926) m. 21 June 1873, Elizabeth Agnes McAllan (21 Mar 1846 - 13 October 1919) James became Collector of Customs Tasmania.
They had 4 children of which James Fox Barnard was the eldest (13 July 1874 - 3 July 1945) He became a Doctor - there are a number of examples of his photography on the Net. He died at Corowa in NSW.
 
Thomas Browne (10 Mar 1816 - 23 Dec 1870) m. 10 Mar 1840 Sara Spicer 5 (July 1821 - 15 July 1903)
They had 14 children - No 8 was RJB ...
Rutherford James Browne (16 Jul 1853 - 9 Sept 1906) m. 28 Sept 1876  Eleanor Emma Wheeler (10 Dec 1851 to ? 1952)
They had children:

Montague Thomas (Monty) 24 Dec 1881

These pet names can really confuse!
