Thirsk cemetery
« on: Wednesday 01 January 14 21:39 GMT (UK) »
My great great grandfather is buried in Thirsk cemetery, in the Dissenters portion. I've done a search for Thirsk cemetery and the links take me to St. Mary's church. Is this the main cemetery in Thirsk? There's no indication of the size of the cemetery, I've followed a number of links but they seem to go round in circles and have been fruitless.

Would appreciate information from anyone who is familiar with this cemetery or any others that could be referred to as Thirsk cemetery.  :)

The Cleveland, North Yorkshire and South Durham Family History Society (http://www.clevelandfhs.org.uk) have transcribed the MIs for Thirsk St Mary and the Methodist graveyards - this may be where you got the information about your ancestor's burial from - and have available for purchase a CD (also available through GenFair).  If you look on Google Earth and find St Mary's church you will see a road going west (Cemetery Road no less!) and just after it turns north, there is the main Thirsk cemetery. My G grandfather (died in WW1) is buried there.  I'm not sure if there is a dissenters section there or if it is in the St Mary's graveyard.  In the past I have found the Thirsk Museum (http://www.homefrontthirsk.org.uk/museum/index.htm) very helpful.  Good Luck!

Hi David, thanks for your reply and welcome to Rootschat!  :)

I got the info about my ancestor's burial from an obituary in a newspaper, found via the Gales site. He was one of four victims of influenza, all dying within a week. The report says that he was a well known character in Thirsk.

Many thanks for the information about the M.I.s and about the cemetery, I'll try to get down there for a look around when the weather's a bit better.  :)
