The Second Boer War - Army Belt
« on: Saturday 04 January 14 11:13 GMT (UK) »
Hi Guys,
I'm trying to discover my great grandfathers regiment in the 1899 - 1902 Boer War.My father described a belt to me that my great grandfather  had had in the  Boer war. He describes it has a black or dark almost velvety textured belt in a cummerbund shape and it had badges of some sort attached to it. I know this is very vague but this is how my father remembers the belt when he was a boy. Any help would be gratefully received. Many Regards, Dai.

Hi Dai

I do not recognise the type you describe. By this period most Regular regiments had adopted this pattern of belt buckle, usually with a white buff belt - which in the field the men would stain with tea, brown paint or dirt so it did not stand out.

Rifle regiments (KRR and Rifle Brigade) usually wore the snake pattern clasp. Guards and some of the Volunteers and Militia battalions who went to South Africa may have worn regimental patterns. A brown smooth leather belt called the Indian pattern was used by Regulars, and by home-based part-time battalions.

If you post the name of your GGF he may be listed in the medal rolls.
