Grove, St James' Church
« on: Saturday 04 January 14 12:09 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for a photo of St James' Church, Grove, as my wife's Great great grandparents, George Barwick and Ann Barwick [nee Mills] were both buried there - 1901 and 1892, and also some of their children were baptised there.

A Google search for photos was fruitless but I did find drawings of plans on : http://www.churchplansonline.org/retrieve_results.asp?c=Berkshire&offset=110

Any help would be appreciated.

St James the Great was reported derelict in the 1960's, and was superceded by St John the Baptist!

Hi,

Like you, I would also like to obtain a photo of the old church of St.James at Grove,  as that is where
both of my g.g.grandparents were buried in 1858 and 1879.

Its one that so far has eluded me as I have always tried to obtain images of churches my ancestors
were associated with.

I haven't contacted them, but could  the Berks RO be of help?

There are a few pictures od St James', Grove by Henry Taunt in the Oxfordshire Archives collection - you can see them online via their Heritage Search feature.

Many thanks for all the input.
Have checked out Oxford Archives  at http://www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/cms/ but the photos they have are of the "new" St James' Church dating from 1901.
Berkshire Record Office don't seem to have a search facility on-line.  Maybe when the weather improves I'll pay them a visit -only an hour away by train.  There's also a Vale & Downland Museum in Wantage that may have photos I suppose. Surely there must be some Victorian photos of the church somewhere!
