William Rufus Diamond
« on: Tuesday 07 January 14 08:48 GMT (UK) »
I am researching William Rufus Diamond. I have found many records which indicate that he was born in Dorking Surrey between 1824 and 1828. He also appears to have links to Brenchley in Kent. Unfortunately I have not been able to locate either a birth or a  baptism record to check this out. Can any one help? I have already posted this topic on the Beginners Forum where you will find what has already been done / found. Here is the link to that topic: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=672762.0

Hi

There is 4yo William Rufus Diamond living in Brenchley in the 1891 census. His father, Edward, was born in Ireland c1856

There is also both an 1871 and 1881 census entry for a William Rufus Diamond living in St Owen, Herefordshire, born in Dorking, Surrey c1826. By 1891 the family have moved to Llangorse, Llanhamlach, Breconshire.

There is also a public family tree on Ancestry that has a William Diamond from Brenchley, born 1925 but who appears to have moved to Australia prior to 1862.

Can you have too many Diamonds?

The 4 yo is the grandson of WRD (b1824-1828). The 1871 and 1881 censii are for WRD (b1824-1828). I presume you mean born in 1825 for the public family tree? Does this tree also say he moved to Australia before 1862?

What I really need is a birth or baptism document / record which gives me his date of birth and preferably the names of his mother and father. I am pretty sure he was born in Dorking, Surrey, but you never know. Do you know of any parish record collections for Kent (Brenchley) which have not yet have been indexed?

Too many? In my case there are already over 90.

Hi
Have you got Find my Past?
Because if you have his service record for the Army is on there.WO97 and says he was born 1824.There is also a possible evidence of age for the Civil service which may help on there.
Also his marriage cert should give his father's name.

Yes I have and I use it a lot. Actually I do have his father's name from his 2nd marriage cert (Joseph, a butcher), but it is really his mother's name I need. I have all his military records, census records etc. and I am waiting for the CSEoA documentation.

There's an 1848 marriage listed in the Ireland, Civil Registration Marriage Index 1848-1958. registration district: Parsonstown, vol 9, page 547, film no: 101242

William Rufis Diamond married either Mary Fitz or Sarah Ann Symons.

Taking into account the possible wife's names, there is an interesting 1851 census:

Brenchley Kent 1851
Joseph Diamond, 62, head, poulterer, born Brenchley Kent
Matilda Diamond, 52, wife, born Leicester
SARAH ANN Diamond, 22, visitor, son's wife, born Plymouth, Devon

Brenchley Kent 1841
Joseph Diamond, 50, dealer, born in county
Matilda Diamond, 40, not born in county

Hi jomcd967

You have stumbled across the marriage of WRD to his first wife Sarah Ann Symons. I had already been advised of this from the Familysearch site, but your information adds a little more. Let me explain:

1) Your source spells Sarah's name as Sarah Ann (whereas Familysearch has Anne with an E).  Ann is the spelling I would be looking for.
2) Your source specified the registration district (Familysearch does not).

On the other hand Familysearch does mention Sarah's mother and father, and the actual date of the marriage. I presume this is because they have seen the actual source record.

Anyway I am very pleased to receive this further information from you. Thanks.

I already have the census data you mentioned but thanks anyway.

Definitely don't get hung up on whether Ann is spelt with or without an "e" on any given occasion. These things were very fluid in the 19thc and will vary from record to record for the same person.

Similarly a person born Mary Ann may appear in documents as Mary, Marion, Marian, Maryan, Marianne, Mary Anne... ::)
