How do I find who their parents were?
« on: Tuesday 07 January 14 11:08 GMT (UK) »
Hello
I am searching for a missing child born to my ancestors. I know they are missing because on the 1911 Census they had ten children, five alive and five dead, but I have only located nine!
I suspect that the missing child died in infancy, as they don't appear on any censuses, and I have found two possible matches on FreeBMD. My ancestors are John (1838-1930) and Elizabeth (nee Rowe, 1849-1919) North, and the two possible children are Emily and Wilfred William, both born Q3 1876, Emily died Q3 1876 and Wilfred Q4 1876.
My question is, what is the best way of finding out the parents of these two children? Do I need to get birth/death certs, and if so, do I need both or just one, or is there any other way? I haven't been able to locate any parish records (births and deaths registered in Bedminster, Devon).
Thanks for reading this, any advice much appreciated.
Cheers

Don't know of a Bedminster in Devon, but there's a Bedminster Registration District that covers parts of Gloucestershire and Somerset.

From earlier census records, where exactly were the other children born?  Did John and Elizabeth have their other children baptised, if so where?
Always looking for GOODWINS in Berkshire :)

'Fraid getting the birth certificates is the only way --they will give parents names

But -- you can send what details you have and a certificate will only be supplied if they are a correct match

So if you ask for the BC of Emily with parents John & Elizabeth Rowe, if the parents names are wrong you will not have wasted your money

Thank you for all the information.
Marmalady, that's useful info, that I don't need to fork out if the cert is for the 'wrong' person.
Garstonite, from your list, Charles Oliver (1875-1950) is John and Elizabeth's first born, then I have Earnest Eli (1879-1915) and Ann Elizabeth (1881-1938), together with Thomas William (1877-1878) from the Methodist Chapel as mentioned by Radcliff.
The other five children I have were all born in Warrington, Lancashire:
Louisa b. Q4 1881 (subject of another thread on RootsChat as I don't know what happened to her after 1901)
Edmund (1883-1947)
John Oliver (1884-1885)
Beatrice (1885-1886)
John (1891-1895)

I haven't found any possible matches in Warrington for a missing child, ie after 1881 and fitting into 'gaps' between the other children.
Cheers

Hello again Mand

Have you checked the children's FreeBMD entries for possible twins with the same or adjacent page number as indexed?

NB Some of the children's births (the Warrington ones) are also indexed locally at CheshireBMD, but nothing there leapt out at me as a candidate for the missing one, I'm afraid.

the two possible children are Emily and Wilfred William, both born Q3 1876, Emily died Q3 1876 and Wilfred Q4 1876.

For what it's worth - Wilfred's burial:

Hi again
Thought about twins, but Emily and Wilfred don't appear to be twins, and if they were, and they were born to John and Elizabeth, that would make the number of children to be 11. None of the other children have a twin, as far as I can see.
Shame Wilfred's burial doesn't give any more info.
I'll give it a bit longer then maybe choose a birth/death cert? Which is best do you think?
Cheers
