Can you date this photo
« on: Monday 20 June 05 00:37 BST (UK) »
Hi all

Recently we found a number of old pics that where my late grandmothers.
I wonder if any one can pin down the aprox date of some and maybe also the age of the subjects.

The first is on plain white card with square corners.

Hi Linda,
Is there anything on the back of the photograph?  Like more details of the photographer?

hi Prue

The back is just plain but some of the others we found do have designs on them.

It looks to me as though this could be later in the 19th century, maybe the mid 1890s, when children's fashions became less restrictive.  She doesn't quite have the leg-o-mutton sleeves happening, but they are long sleeves and not fitted as in previous decades.  Her long hair worn down indicates that she was not yet of the age where long dresses went on and the hair went up - usually around 16-18 years old.  I'm sure someone else will have much better and more accurate information on costume and hair than me, though!

For a definitive date on the photograph I would need to see it close up, but if I give you some advice on what to look for, you could do it yourself - let me know if you want to go this way.  It could be one of a number of processes that were around in the late 19th century, and they can normally be pretty well identified using their physical characteristics.
Cheers
Prue

Hi again Prue

Thanks for your comments and very much appreciated. Both my mother and I believe the pic may be of my great aunt Eveline who was born in 1892 and may be the only photo we are likely to identify.

If this is Eveline then the photo would have to be 1901 to 1905 but as she had an older sister (my grandmother) the clothes could have been hand me downs. What do you think?

Hi Sylvia

That is an interesting site, thank you. Looking at the styles would suggest this photo is older and back when Evaline would have been much younger. In which case  my thoughts that she would be about 11 years old is way off.

I have a couple more photos of the same subject which appear to be spaced over several years. The first being the one I posted. The second I would guess is when she is around 16. The last when she was around 20. Sadly  she died aged 21 in 1914.

These last photos do fit in with the examples of fashion which I have seen on other sites but the first doesnt quite fit in. She could be much younger or extremely tall for her age or it is of another family member with identical facial features.

Hi Jim

Thank you for your reply and comments.
I tried googling for the photographers and found some info but none on the Maidstone branch where we feel sure this photo was taken.
We do have a photo by the same company which is dated 1910 but it is produced with the familiar post card back.
