Seeking information on Weston brothers emigrating from Etchingham
« on: Wednesday 08 January 14 12:52 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

Over the years I have been able to piece together some background on my great grandfather, Richard S. Weston (DOB 7 Mar 1870), whom emigrated to the USA along with two of his brothers, Alfred J. Weston (DOB 22 Apr 1868), and William R. Weston (DOB 1872), and a cousin, William J. Weston (DOB 28 Aug 1872), leaving Liverpool on 26 May 1894 aboard the HMS Lucania, I believe.  They all came from Etchingham.    Did they leave any siblings behind?  Of particular interest is the cousin, William J. Weston, who died of TB I think on 13 Oct 1898 and is buried in Portsmouth NH USA.  I am pretty sure his mother, Mary Ann Weston, is buried in the Etchingham Church cemetery.  Any information to paint a better picture of their life in the UK before leaving would be much appreciated.

Here's a few census for the family
1871 Blands cottages Burwash,Sussex
Samuel Weston 31 ag lab Etchingham
Jane 25 Burwash
Caroline T J 4
Alfred J 2
Richard S 1
Honor Pilbeam m in law W 64 ag lab widow Burwash
1881 Underwoods Old Burwash Road Burwash
Caroline has been replaced with William R Weston age 8 and Grandma is still there.
Caroline Jane T Weston had died age 13 in mar 1880 2b 71 Ticehurst.
It looks like Samuel and Jane followed their children to the US and are there on the 1900 census Portsmouth Rockingham New Hampshire.
Richard Weston born mar 1870 arr 1888 Stationary
Samuel father Feb 1840 arr 1893  lab brewery
Jane mother June ? 1844 arr 1893
So the whole of that family seem to have gone.
The cousin has a bigger family
1881 census Sheep St Lane
John Weston 42 farm servant Etchingham
Mary Ann 41 Burwash
Elizabeth Ann 21 Sandhurst (married Nathaniel Lester)
Lucy 13 Etchingham (died Sep 1884 age 16)
Alice 11 (m Sep 1896 William James Dann)
William John 8
Ellen 4 Salehurst (m Mar 1906 John Thomas Pilbeam and died 1964)
Joseph 2 Etchingham later worked for the railways.Married a Mary Maria Relf June 1904.
Caroline Minnie 10mths.(married Albert Stevenson Brighton 1912?)
There is also Frances Amy born 1865 Etchingham (who died unmarried Dec 1921)  and Mary Ann born 1866 who married a James Eastwood Mar 1889..
Father John died June 1934 age 95 Ticehurst 2b 151 and Mary Ann died Sep 1898 2b 67 age 58.
None of the rest of his brothers and sisters seem to have followed him out there.
Sorry to repeat others info but it took me a while to type it out.

Thanks for the info.  The word is that Alfred first came to the USA in the late 1880's on advice of his doctor and stayed 2 years in Portsmouth before returning to Etchingham to marry his fiancee, who had died while he was away.  He convinced his two brothers to come back to Portsmouth with him, and his parents, Samuel and mary, followed a few years later.  Apparently they were sick of being dirt farmers.  William J. weston married my great-granmother Carrie Waine shortly before dying, then she married my great grandfather, Richard S. weston, which caused some kind of minor scandal.  oh, dear!
