Tan-Yr-Hen-Ffordd, Clwt y Bont (1861)
« on: Friday 10 January 14 07:32 GMT (UK) »
I would be grateful if anyone could find out who was living at the above address (Llanddeiniolen) at that date. It might also have been known as Henffordd, or Tan-Y-Ffordd. The gentleman I'm interested in would have had a first name of William.

The Pritchards are actually relatives (Robert Pritchard's mother-in-law was a Foulkes) - albeit I suspect irrelevant ones in this case !. I'm searching for a gentleman called William Foulkes, whose MI ( d 1865) suggests him to have been born in 1811, in which case he would have been considerably older than his widow (Ellen b Llanddeiniolen c 1836) , shown in 1871 and 1881. He seems to have had two children, John ( c 1864 - 1883) and Maria Ellin ( 1861 -  ) . The daughter must have been born around the census time, but I cannot find an appropriate marriage either around the late 1850s. The 1871 census seems to suggest that his widow's maiden name was Thomas, and that Tan-Yr-Hen-Ffordd/ Henffordd (From MI) was her parents' home.
I can only think that he had been known by another surname, or that the transcription on his grave gives the wrong age.

Maria Ellin Foulke was born in Sept Qtr in 1861 so the couple should be together in 1861

I wonder if this could be the couple in 1861 with mother in law, although the age of the memorial would be incorrect.  Living at Llanddeiniolen

William Foulkes    30 b Llanddeinolen Quarryman

Yes indeed, that's them. It must be an MI transcription error. Thank you very much indeed.

I'm not entirely sure how,but if Elinor, the mother, had reverted to her maiden name, could this be the family  in 1851?

It could well be. I cannot find William Foulkes prior to 1861, either. There are quite a lot of examples of wives reverting to their maiden name in widowhood.
