Hello Everyone
My ggfather George Vincent Kean/Keane/Keen b: South Australia 29 Oct 1891, d:20 Aug 1974 he was married 17 Aug 1919 to Cecilia Alice Burke in Essex, London and divorced officially in 1942. He fathered my grandmother with another woman in the 1930s. He had 2 sisters, Elizabeth Stella Kean b: 24 Nov 1894, South Australia and Ethel Louisa Kean b: 5 March 1897 in South Australia, also an unknown birth b: & d: 5 Apr 1908 (and perhaps another brother, living at the time of his father's death). George fought in France in WW1, 32nd battalion, 1st AIF, but lied about his age to enlist for the war.
His parents are a bit of a mystery. His father, George Alexander Kean's birth was c. 1860, perhaps in Italy?, d: 15 Jun 1916 in Parkside Mental Hospital, Adelaide (father Thomas Kean). His mother Anne Bell b: c. 1869, location ?, father John Bell. They were married in South Australia 28 Jul 1892. A relative of mine has done quite a bit of research on this and this is as much as she was able to ascertain. She had some census records for George Alexander Kean showing him as a cab proprietor around Adelaide from 1890 to 1913, but prior to 1882 he was listed as a butcher.
I am very eager to find out some more about this family line and would appreciate any help.
Thank you
Skye

Where did you obtain George's date of birth?.  His birth is not registered in South Australia.  I have search just using the date...nothing.

There are no surviving census records in South Australia for the era you mention.

As I see the situation...and apologies for duplicating information but trying to make sense of the possibility that there was only one George Alexander KEAN.

Birth with mistranscribed surname.

When completing a form for post discharge employment in England, George Vincent KEAN stated he was 28 years and 4 months old when he enlisted on 24 Jan 1916  So do we have a year of birth of 1888.  Perhaps he was being honest at this time.

Did George Stanley become George Vincent?

Hello Cando
From your response:

"When completing a form for post discharge employment in England, George Vincent KEAN stated he was 28 years and 4 months old when he enlisted on 24 Jan 1916  So do we have a year of birth of 1888.  Perhaps he was being honest at this time.

Did George Stanley become George Vincent?"

Thanks for the info :D
I am investigating this all some more, while my head is boggling! I couldn't find the record search form for post discharge employment you have given the link for above. When I click the link it is for someone else. A William Thom (?). Could you please see if I am doing the right thing? I can only find George V's enlistment record which states he is 24 7/12 years on enlistment in 1916. It does seem strange to have 2 George's to one father and I would love to know if they are the same person.
Thanks again
Skye

Lordy me and that link is to George Vincent's WW1 file.....I didn't notice that the papers are in the wrong file.

Please read my long post where George Alexander KEAN fathers children with Mary Grace BOLITHO and then marries as a SINGLE person as did the mother of the children.

Cando

Edit - have advised NAA of the two pages that do not belong in George Vincent's file.

George KEEN died 17 Jun 1916. [This is actual his date of burial - always have to check cemetery records with death registrations and newspaper notices].  No age noted.
He is buried at West Terrace Cemetery, Section Catholic Western Ground Row Number M, Site#84

Buried at the same location as George.
Ann Lillian NORMAN who died 12 Sep 1942 aged 3 years.  Last resided at Fullarton

SA Records GRG 34/120  Glenside Hospital Deaths  1891-1918

The records that I have show that the 1908 birth died within 3 hours of the birth, so it is not Robert.
However, that means that the birth record of Robert (Bob) and that of George are not on the SA system?  I will have to check with my relative about how she got George's birth date record and get back to you all.
Fantastic Cando, I will apply to get that photo next week!
The date of death for George A Kean that I have is 15 June 1916, so that burial date would fit nicely. I wonder who Ann Lillian Norman is? A grandchild?
Born in Ireland would make much more sense than Italy as I couldn't locate any Keans in Italy! I will pursue this some more, thank you!
