George Saxon abt 1926 - 1871
« on: Monday 13 January 14 23:11 GMT (UK) »
My GGGrandfather George Saxon came to Australia on the Salacia in 1850.  I have successfully traced his profile in Australia.  However, I cannot trace him back into England.  I believe he was from Ashton Under Lynne, Lancashire.  Would there be records from the government / shipping company that would have address / next of kin details about passengers prior to departure?  The first born sons of the next two generations were called George Henry so maybe my GGGrandfather was also a George Henry although there is nothing in the Australian records to suggest this. Any help will be appreciated.  ylrad

Hi Groom,  Thank you for your response so quickly.  After a process of elimination and heaps of searching I did attach the 1841 census to George's profile in the hope someone would either confirm or repudiate the link.  After several months of waiting for comment I may have to bite the bullet and start working on the profiles of the rest of the family listed and see if anything turns up that will confirm the decision.

Once again - Thank you for your help.

Hi

FamilySearch have the christening of a George Saxon on 1st August 1830 in Aston Under Lyne. His parents were George and Mary. However, there were also other George Saxons about of the same age.

Our passenger records seem to start at 1890 and often don't have much in the way of details. The only mention I can see is the one you have probably found
Mr George Saxon
Port of Departure:   Adelaide, South Australia
Port of Arrival:   Port Jackson, New South Wales
Voyage Arrival Date:   4 Dec 1850
Vessel Name:   Salacia

That only gives his name, no other details.

The only problem with that death is that the younger children Mary, Eliza and Sarah were born after that. There is a big gap between George and Mary though.

The ages and names of some of the other children don't fit with the 1841, so I think there must have been several families with the same names in the area.

His Australian marriage certificate , should give his fathers occupation and name, , Have you seen his death certificate , does that not name his father and mother, for some reason I thought Australian documents had parents details included,
