wrong birth date
« on: Wednesday 15 January 14 13:31 GMT (UK) »
I was looking for a edward scott born 1662 because on his death it said born 1662 died 1837 there is no record of him in Cheshire being born that year but I did find a edward scott born 1666 in nantwich which is the area I am searching...could it be possible that when he died they got his age and birth year wrong.I was wondering how accurate the cheshire parish records are with dates

Hello Hayley - please can you clarify the dates?

He can't have been born in 1662 (or 1666) if he died in 1837, as he would have been over 170 years old at death.  Is one or more of these dates in the wrong century?

Age given at death is only as good as the knowledge of the person giving the details. It's quite possible & often happened that a guesstimate was given as to his age.
did he leave a will?

I have know idea about a will I must look in to that......I do have a edward born district of nantwich 1766 father Robert but no mother named.....nantwich is the right district for wrenbury as far as I can see the Scott's stayed within the area as Edwards children were born in wrenbury....I should take a guess his wife did the registration of his death she out lived him

Are you talking civil registration here?   That only started at the end of 1837.  Prior to that the only records are parish registers showing the baptism or burial.   Are you looking at an original source or just a transcript?

The Wrenbury parish register shows that Edward Scott of Newhall Lane was buried on 18 April 1837 aged 75, so he dodged civil registration (1 July 1837 onwards) by 2 and a bit months.

I hate it when my ancestors do that ;D

I take it I am looking at a transcript.....so he might not have been 75 when he died so he could have been younger,so pre 1837 the records may not be correct and he could be born in 1766 ...Is there also a chance his birth or baptism was never recorded.

There was no official record of birth.
There would have been a record of his baptism -IF was christened. He might not have been, or might not have been a small baby when christened.
If there was a record of a christening, then it might not have survived.
And, more to the point, it might not be online!
Remeber not all parish registers are online.
