Sussex/Hampshire Battman/Batman
« on: Friday 24 January 14 18:59 GMT (UK) »
Hello, I've done extensive research on my 3rd Grandfather Newman Battman born in Funtington, Sussex on 5/7/1806, however its all forwards rather than backwards so I decided to attempt to go a little further back but its all guesswork.

John & Sarah BATMAN (nee Guard)
MARRIAGE:    2 April 1804 - Chichester, Sussex, England
05/07/1806 Newman John Sarah BATMAN birth
30/08/1807 William Not given Sarah BATTMAN birth
24/07/1808 Charlotte John Sarah BATMAN birth
10/03/1815 BATMAN Charlotte 6 from West Ashling burial

The problem is I have no idea how to prove whether this is true or not.  Are these Newman's parents, are these Newman's siblings.   Its all based on probability, is there anyone who can help me try and prove it one way or another?

Thanks Helen Thomas (nee Battman)
Regards

Helen

Hi Jenifer, I haven't really looked at wills, he does have an ancestry probate record but he died at a ripe old age and left most things to his daughter and her husband, but he had many surviving children, so you have pigued my interest, why only 1, is it because the probate only mentions the executors.  do you know how I would get hold of the will?

Thanks very much for the idea.

Helen

Probate records do only mention the person to whom probate was granted.  The full will may have much more detail.
There is a guide to London wills here

It is very helpful for other areas too though and tells you how to order a copy.

I see you have a marriage for John and Sarah, but have not stated the ripe old age John reached and when he died.

I ask because the IGI gives some births to John and Sarah in Funtington (under Batman, Battman and Bateman) but not all.  The SFHG also lists children born to a John & Sarah in Funtington but that couple have children born way back to 1787. Forgive the pun, but a family from 1787 to 1808 is quite conceivable.  In 1817 there was the death of an 80 year old John Batman in Funtington followed in 1827 by a 62 year old Sarah.  Both individuals were said to have come from West Ashling (where daughter Charlotte was buried) if that is of any further help.

Hence verifying that this is the right marriage and an age for John are of importance for they will enable you to decide whether there were two couples in the village with the same name combination, the same couple had a family that was far larger than you intially thought, or after the death of a first wife Sarah, a slightly senior John married another more sprightly Sarah.

The marriage to Sarah Guard shows John as parish of St Peter the Great Chichester.   There is also a marriage in Chichester St Peter the Great for John Battman to Sarah Bockham on 3 Sep 1786.

Ah......

I had both marriages and had concluded 2 families, it never occurred to me that it was the same john and 2 different Sarah's.  that is an interesting concept and thank you all.

Now to find the deaths...
