Burke & Hare bodysnatchers & Helen MacDougal
« on: Monday 27 January 14 15:14 GMT (UK) »
I am wondering if anyone might know the identity and ancestry of Helen M(a)cDougal, the companion of William Burke the bodysnatcher.  She was apparently a native of Redding, Stirlingshire and had 2 children by her lawful husband (name unknown) before taking up with a Sawyer named McDougal.  She abandoned her family and went with Burke to Peebles and then in 1827 to Edinburgh where they started murdering people.  After Burke's execution in 1829 it is thought that she moved to Newcastle in England and then possibly to Australia dying around 1868 (not sure about this).  Any assistance with this would be much appreciated. :-)
