James Henry Goodall
« on: Wednesday 29 January 14 03:04 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for any information regarding James Henry Goodall, Parents James Scholes Goodall and Mary Beech. James Henry Goodall was born in Manchester, England and baptised 17th May 1866. In 1893 he married Lucy Maxey Joyce in Manchester. James died on the 9th June 1899 in Riebfontein, Johannesburg, South Africa. While the family was in South Africa at least one child was born, he was James Archibald Goodall, born 6th January 1897 in Buffelsdan, Klerhdorp, Transvaal, South Africa. After Jame's death the family moved back to England. If anyone could furnish me with any information as to when they went to South Africa and what he was doing there I would be very grateful.
Thanking You,
Rosjan.

FindMyPast has a record of a Mr J Goodall (born 1865) travelling to East London, South Africa in 1893?

You'll need credits to view the record ;D

Lucrative business opportunities in South Africa after the first Boer War ended in 1881
coincidentally the second Boer War started 11 th October 1899 - 16 weeks after James died - that would be more than likely why the family returned to England - have a read ...

Hi
Do you have this record?
Marriage: 8 Jul 1893 Oldham Rd Congregational, Miles Platting, Lancashire, England
James Goodall - 28, Metal Miner, Bachelor, Johannesburg, South Africa
Lucy Maxey Joyce - 24, Spinster, 59 Butler St., Oldham Rd.
Groom's Father: James Archibald Goodall
Bride's Father: Samuel Joyce
Married by: W. H. Towers

So he must have been to South Africa before 1893.

Heather

Thank you all for your replies regarding James Henry Goodall. It was most helpful. He certainly didn't make his fortune in South Africa as according to his probate notice his estate was valued at 35 pounds.
Regards,
Rosjan.
