James Moore Alderman
« on: Friday 31 January 14 09:41 GMT (UK) »
I’m trying to find out if John Alderman, a Sheppard who appears on the 1841 census living in Kington, St Michael, Wiltshire (and on the 1851 census living in Studley, Calne) is John 'Moore' Alderman, son of James Alderman and Catherine Goddard, born 9 Feb 1799 (bap: 24 Feb 1799 in Chisledon, Wiltshire).

On the 1841 census John is living with his wife Mary and children: Susanna, Jesse, Catherine and Sarah (baptisms available on Family Search) and by 1851 it is just John and his wife Mary with no children living in Studley, Calne. On this census it says he was born in Badbury, which I think is a mile from Chisledon noted on the baptism.

I know his daughter Catherine Alderman married James Doman in Cardiff in 1856, but cannot find what happened to any of the other children after 1841.

The baptisms of John’s children say he is a Labourer, the censuses say Sheppard and his daughter Catherine’s marriage says Husbandman.

Also a family tree online lists John Moore Alderman’s siblings as Mary, Anne, James, Susanna, Jesse Philip and Jane.

Any information will be a great help, Thank you

when he married he doesn't use his middle name

Name:John Alderman
Gender:Male
Marriage Date:25 Nov 1821
Marriage Place:Berwick Bassett,Wiltshire,England
Spouse:  Mary Pullin
FHL Film Number:950249

but certainly the name he gives his children appear to be family names

A baptism in Kington St Michael on 28/1/1827 of Jane Alderman, dau of John & Mary. Not found in 1841 census. Wilts BMD shows death of Jane Alderman age 12 in Christian Malford (5 - 6 miles from Kington St Michael)

There is a very good Alderman One name study with lots of data, some from Wiltshire:

There is also a booklet on Alderman research for sale on this site.

Hope this helps.  Gazania

Thank you everyone. It seems they all ended up moving to the Machen area of Monmouthshire. Susanna Alderman married John Kenvin in 1854 and her mother (Mary Alderman) was living with her on the 1871 census. Mary died in 1873 and was buried in Machen. Her age suggests she was born in about 1796 (there's a Mary 'Pullen' baptism in Broad Hinton, Wiltshire in 1797 which fits but the age is different to the 1841 and 1851 censuses.)

Susanna's father John Alderman was buried in Machen in 1871, but I cannot find him (John Alderman born Badbury) and Mary (born Broad Hinton) on the 1861 census.
