Godalming Parish Records 1851/52 - Please Help
« on: Friday 31 January 14 09:51 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I am desperately looking for the parents of Alfred James Hall b1851 Godalming and his brother Robert b1852 Godalming. I can trace them through the census returns without any problems, neither of their marriages are recorded except the registration. I would like to avoid buying the birth certificate if possible as I really can't afford it at the moment I really need to know (I have my suspicions) which of the previous generations brothers is their father. So if anyone has access to these records I would truly appreciate it.

Thank you, Jo

Thanks Rosie,
I am in Australia and knew Stephen and Robert were over here then. My suspicion is the father is Thomas Alfred Hall who was the minister of Godalming Congregational Church in the early 1850's and died there in 1852 (which would be why the boys are with their grandfather) but I can't see a marriage for him and can't pin down the other brothers in 1851 so still other possibilities. Was hoping someone had access to the parish records in that time.

Thanks for looking,

Jo  :)

Thanks Rosie,
I just went back and checked the 1851 census, I thought it said unm but rechecking it does say married so this looks a likely option.

Thanks for that,

Jo  :)

Some Godalming C of E records are on Ancestry for the 1840/50's. If Thomas was an independent minister I would think they would be christened in his church.

I can't see Thomas death, where/when did he die

Hi Rosie,
He was buried 6 Feb 1852 in Hastings Sussex, on the nonconformist registers. I have looked for the boys baptisms but will try again.

Thanks, Jo  :)
