Harp Alley, St. Brides
« on: Thursday 06 February 14 09:42 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know if the old rent or rate books exist for Harp Alley. I'm interested in the period 1842 to 1856.
William Williams lived at 21, Harp Alley and traded as a hairdresser at No.1 Harp Alley.
He appears in the 1841 census and in n 1856 Trade Directory at being in Harp Alley.
I've searched every Williams in the 1851 census, but can't find the family.
So now I'm hoping that old rent or rate books might help.
Or, are their other 'avenues' I can explore to find the family during that period?
Thanks in advance
This is the 1841 census:

William Williams
Age:   33
Civil Parish:   St Bride and Precinct
Piece:   726
Book:   3
Folio:   21
Page Number:   37
William Williams    33
Ann Williams    28
Mary Ann Williams    4
Elizth Williams    2
Jonathan Williams

William was born in Wales & was a hairdresser.

Hi

There's an LDS film of freemen and non-freemen occupiers 1849-50 at the London LDS library.

https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/318250?availability=Family%20History%20Library

I can look it up next time I'm there.

There are also these records at the Guildhall Library:

https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/294864?availability=Family%20History%20Library

I don't know if these can be viewed via their system whilst at the LDS library, but I can ask.

That would be very kind of you!
I don't live near London, so researching there is hard for me.
Thank you Gaie

Hi Ripper

Unfortunately your William was not listed in the Farringdon Without Ward records that I looked at (film #578906).  The records listed people alphabetically, which was helpful.  I didn't see Harp Alley mentioned though.

The other films I referred to are not held in the London LDS, they would have to be ordered in at £7.50 each and could take 2 months to arrive; and there's no guarantee that he is included in the records.

I may be visiting the Guildhall Library sometime in the future, so if nobody else comes along I'll have a look when I go.

The records are no longer at Guildhall but now at LMA. The Rate Assessment Books are in series P69/BRI/C/003/MS03435 (listed in the LMA online catalogue).

Thanks for looking Gaie,
I'm literally looking for the last piece of the most enormous jigsaw puzzle ever!
I dream of the words Williams & Harp!
