Married in this church by L.A.B.
« on: Thursday 06 February 14 15:24 GMT (UK) »
I have just found a marriage for 5xgreat grandparents at St Martin in the Fields, Westminster in 1774.  There are 4 marriages to a page, with the scan being of 2 pages.  The other 7 marriages are all By Banns but "mine" is by L.A.B.  I presume this means Licence .... ?  Can anyone help to add the words to the initial letters, please.

I saw the marriage licence (as well as the original parish register entry) for my ancestor married in 1796 at Westminster City Archives on microfilm.  They my be on-line now?

Thanks for that Paul.  I will have another look when I have my next free half hour on Ancestry.com at my local library. It's amazing what records are on there now - I also found the birth of an ancestor in the British Lying-in Hospital, Endell Street, Holborn in 1752, it gave full details - parents' names, man's occupation, woman's age, abode, date she was admitted etc.  The entries were so clear to read too.  I found this by googling - "principally intended for the "wives of poor industrious Tradesmen or distressed House-keepers" and the wives of soldiers and sailors." My ancestor was a mariner.  Wonderful stuff!

my next free half hour on Ancestry.com at my local library.

For Westminster parishes, only the bishops' transcripts are on Ancestry, starting around 1800. The parish registers are on Find My Past, but are not yet complete.

Thanks Bookbox, I'm just reading up what's on where.  I've been flitting between my FindMyPast sub at home and Ancestry at the library.  I got the marriage entry from FindMyPast but the birth & baptism at the Lying-in Hospital from Ancestry.
