music printer
« on: Friday 07 February 14 07:59 GMT (UK) »
the oldest person I've been able to trace in my family tree was born in 1822 and listed in every record I've found of his as a music printer I am unable to find him in the 1841 census when he would of been around 19 although I know his fathers name and trade from his 1849 marriage cert I have been unable to connect him with a family . I have wondered for some time now if a music printer would need an apprenticeship and if so weather there would be any records stored for it can any one help??????

Hi Tezzer

The following links may be of interest!
http://www.amaranthpublishing.com/Printers.htm

http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-34893.html
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/apprentice.htm

From what I can gather from the last 2 links, yes he may well have been apprenticed but any records of the same  may be non existent or be hard to come by.

Maybe you'd like to throw out the name and details of the person you're looking for in 1841 , incl the details of his father (and witness', address' ) from the 1849 cert and see if we can help find him for you!?

Cheers
AMBLY

Thanks for the links Ambly, I will have a bit more time to follow them up at the weekend . The person in question has been driving me mad for ages. Its John Joyce born around 1822. In Borough/Lambeth all his addresses are in ST Giles/Bloomsbury areas then later Islington and is always listed as a music printer. His father is a John Joyce who's trade, given on the marriage cert is a whitesmith. I have not been able to link my John to any of the older Joyce's in the 1841 census  There are a couple of likely candidates who lived near the address given for his first child born in 1844 one of which is listed as a smith from Lincoln ct ST Giles, the forenames used by the family are commonly used in the family groups that are directly descended from my John. I've also found records  relating to a John Joyce who is a whitesmith who had two children Maria and Henry baptised in 1833 at ST Martin in the fields his wife is listed as Maria again all names used in my Johns family but, I've not found any links to join them together. There are two John Joyce's listed as being in Clerkenwell prison in 1841 of around my John Joyce's age which may explain why I cant find him elsewhere.
                                       Thanks again Ambly
