William VOYSEY - Portsmouth - Militia records
« on: Tuesday 11 February 14 11:42 GMT (UK) »
I am seeking info about a William Voysey who committed suicide in 1880 in Portsmouth. I think he may be my great-grandfather. The report of the inquest mentions that he had been in the Hants Artillery Militia but had to leave due to ill-health. I can't often get to Portsmouth,  but think they might have some records of the militia there.so if anyone is going to the record centre I'd be very grateful if they could see if there is anything, and especially if possible see if William Voysey is listed.I'd be particularly interested to know if there are any details of his family.I know my great-grandfather's family, but want to be sure this is the same person. Thank you very much.

Hi,

There is an article about his suicide in the Hampshire Telegraph dated 12th May 1880.  It says he was 40 years old but doesn't mention any family details.

I can send a copy of the article if you send me a personal message with your e-mail address

Thank you Sue, but I have already seen the report in the Hampshire Telegraph. I was just hoping the militia records might have some additional info. He was estranged from his family.

I don't think that Portsmouth Record Office or the library has militia records - they certainly don't show up in their guide.  I.m fairly certain that these are kept at the National Archives at Kew.  :-\

Thanks Nell, I guess I'll have to make a trip to Kew one day.
