Marriage Records St Pauls of Liverpool
« on: Wednesday 12 February 14 08:14 GMT (UK) »
I have a copy of my great grandfather's marriage record from the G.R.O. with the basic information on it but I was wondering if it is possible to obtain a copy of the original record (eg. from the church) and if so how would I go about it? I am hoping the church record might have more details such as the bride and groom's signatures and whether their fathers were in attendance on the day. The bride and groom were Sarah Huddart and James Loftus and they were married on 22nd July 1854 at St. Pauls Church in Liverpool.  Any advice appreciated.  Jan

If you can get to a library with access to Ancestry, the certificate is on there.

I have a copy of my great grandfather's marriage record from the G.R.O. with the basic information on it.

On a marriage certificate from England & Wales that's all you get!
Ordering a copy from the local Register Office, may get you a copy of the original hand-written entry, but the information is exactly the same.

The Parish Register entry, referred to by heatherjulie, won't show much more information.

The only information for the fathers are their names, profession, and (sometimes) the word "deceased". BUT the absence of that word does not imply they were alive!
They may have signed as witnesses - but not in this case. :(

only posting this because St Paul was a fabulous looking church
http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Liverpool/Liverpool-Central/stpaul/index.html
have a look - at the time this was quite a well to do area ...
I didn`t know until I read that link - but Liverpool Stadium was built on St Paul`s grounds
and I saw Led Zeppelin there in 1969 ??...the thought of a heavy rock band pounding out those sounds on which used to be church grounds - I like the idea of that...people still congregated there 200 years after St Paul was built

I agree that the parish entry won't show any more information than the copy from GRO, however it WILL have original signatures of the bride, groom and witnesses.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

As it's been said here already get the Ancestry copy it's free via computers at Liverpool libraries. The Ancestry copy is the church copy with original signatures.

Edit: I see from your profile you are in Tasmania so ignore the bit about Liverpool libraries PCs.

Thank you all for your postings - I am trying to locate James parents at the time of his wedding (1854)  and I thought they may have signed the church record 'cause he was underage.  James appeared in 1851 Liverpool Census from Ireland aged 15, seemingly alone.  In 1851 he was apprenticed to a baker and living with the baker and his family at 66 Bedford St., Liverpool, not with his parents - would the apprenticeship records have to be signed by his father (therefore proving that his parents were in Liverpool too?).  Any ideas?  Jan

Hiya Jan - IGI has 2 Martin Loftus in 1841 census born in Ireland residing in Liverpool
one is in City Centre and one is in St Thomas , which was Park Lane towards Toxteth end and towards the docks .
Bedford street is Toxteth - so the St Thomas parish Martin Loftus in 1841 might be worth researching to see if James is there as well
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MQLS-7BP

ADDED...2 Martin Loftus in Liverpool in 1840`s having children baptised
Martin Loftus and Ellen Maloney
Martin Loftus and Bridgit Narey

did James have a daughter named Ellen or Bridgit ?
added
forget Martin and Ellen - they married in Liverpool in 1842
