We are searching for details about Patrick Byrne - born approx. 1856.

He is present in 1901 census of Ireland in Goldenfort near Baltinglass with his brother and sister.

What we want to find out is when he travelled to Australia and when he returned?

What we do know is that he worked at breaking horses for the British Army in Australia??

Is there a way to look up British Army records for 1850 - 1900 in Australia as well as emigrants from Ireland to Oz.

Would really appreciate help to show us where to start looking.

Also how would I find his parents??

Many thanks,

Patricia

In the 1901 census he's 45 which would make him 60 ish in WW1.  A bit old for horsebreaking.

So are you saying that he had already been to Australia and returned to Ireland by 1901?

Hi,,,there is a service record for a  Patrick Byrne b 1855  Baltinglass,,,,he enlisted in Armagh in 1877,,,,served till 1882,,,he was a groom by trade,,,gave his next of kin as his father Patrick.

His record states he was signed off due to debility.  He was in Aldershot in 1881,,according to his sickness record,,,so he may be the Patrick Byrne in the 1881 census in the army at Aldershot ,,,,search for Patrick Byrne b 1856,,,then choose the result in Hartley-Wintney/Hampshire.

if this is your man,,,maybe ,,as he was a groom,,he worked with horses in the army,,,then later volunteered to work with them again in a civilian capacity in Australia.

What is the source of your info that he was in Australia working with horses ?

Thanks for the reply gortonboy. It is an old family story re: Australia. Patrick came back from Australia and bought the land that the family now live on. His brothers grandson gave us the info re: breaking horses. It is quite possible that he worked with horses because his uncle was a coachman on the local estate so perhaps patrick was a groom there??

Hi gortonboy ...

we were just wondering where you found the info above as it seems to fit quite well with what we know of Patrick? Many thanks. Patricia
