Sorry. I don't have a lot on them. My Grt Grandfather Joseph Shillady came over to Scotland and settled in Ayrshire sometime in the mid to late 1800's. My Grandfather James was born there around 1886. That's about as much as i know.
Unfortunatley i have non of the Shilady line left to ask.

We needed a starting point to be able to help you and you've given it. So...

Son's Scottish birth certificate (c18886) will list date and place of parents' marriage. If the marriage took place in Ireland then you will get the residences of bride and groom at the time as well as their fathers' names & occupations which will probably allow you to get further back. Without more details like those you are unlikely to be able to search Irish records and be sure you've found the correct family.

Census records will also help. This looks like Joseph in Dalry, Ayrshire (I used to know it well) with wife and family. Since Janet was born in Scotland the marriage probably took place there.
1891- Bathbank, Dalry, Ayrshire, Scotland
Joseph Shillady, 34, Ireland, farm servant
wife Janet Shillady, 30, Mauchline Ayrshire, farm servant's wife
daughter Jane Shillady, 7, West Kilbride Ayrshire, scholar
son James Shillady,2, Dalry Ayrshire
Also 1 visitor (Elizabeth Denning, 13, West Kilbride, scholar) & 1 boarder

1901- East Barnaigh, Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire
Joseph Shillady, 40, Ireland, farmer
wife Janet Shillady, 40, Mauchline Ayrshire
daughter Jane D. Shillady, 17, West Kilbride Ayrshire, farmer's daughter
son James Shillady, 12, Dalry Ayshire, scholar
daughter Janet Shillady, 6, Kilbirnie Ayrshire
Also 1 farm servant

Going back to 1881 census, this looks like Joseph:
1881- Meikle Busbie, Old Ardrossan, Ayrshire
servant Joseph Shelladay, 24, Ireland, farm servant
in household of Robert Brown

So I found In 1863/4 there are only about 8  Shillidays homesteads in Co Down as listed in the Griffiths valuation in www. Askaboutireland.ie.    Nevertheless you seem to have a hunch about Joseph coming from Drumgooland  and I trust you followed up Ros Davies Co Down website

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rosdavies/SURNAMES/S/SheSho. for more of the family to explore, and this identifies a researcher Philip Westerman., who if it is not you, then get in contact via Ros website.   The entries show the difficult economics apart from the famine of the times resulting in a reason for Joseph to leave, apart from the famine of the times, although this may not be your Joseph.

Miss   Agnes (Nancy)  SHILLADY SHILLIDAY Drumgooland daughter of James Shillady; aged 22 married John Whiteside 23 Oct 1860 ; mother of John b. 1867 & Jane b. 1869 (regd. Ballyward)   CR

Joseph SHILLIDAY   .   Drumgooland   of Backaderry; leased 18 acres in 1849 from Annesley estate, rent for 1/2 year was £ 6.8.11; in arrears by £25.15.8   AERR
Joseph   SHILLIDAY Murdock/Murdie 14 Oct 1852 in Magherally ; father of Isabella b. 28 Apr 1865 & William James b. 23 Jan 1869 (regd. Dromore)   CR
Miss   Susan/ Susanna/Susannah   SHILLEDAY SHELLIDAY SHILLADY   . Kilmegan & Drumgooland    daughter of Joseph Shilleday; married Robert Magill 4 Dec 1860 in Kilmegan; mother of Mary b. 1866 & Susanna b. 1868 & Robert b. 1871 & Joseph Alexander b. 1873 (regd. Ballyward)   CR

Ros also has notes on the townland. Backaderry which leads me back to Griffiths which ends excitingly with a variant spelling
SHELLIDAY    JOSEPH    DOWN    DRUMGOOLAND
SHELLIDAY    JAMES    DOWN    DRUMGOOLAND
SHELLIDAY    MARY    DOWN    DRUMGOOLAND
Josephs homestead should be findable on Griffiths section for maps after the name is found and the townland looked up it is plot No98
Now who was his father and mother back to you
Good luck jimG

Thank You.
The Whiteside name rings a bell. The Shillady side did have a custom of using  names of Ancestors as middle names for children. And i am sure my Grt Grandfathers was Whiteside. Will need to do a bit of searching boxes to find any old birth certificates etc.
