Missing one forename from a will
« on: Friday 21 February 14 13:16 GMT (UK) »
The attached is an extract of a will from 1637.

The underlined part says

I give to my wife *****

The name has 5 or 6 letters and my best guess has no more than 3 of them

*ho**e

Happy to be corrected, but if you can help can you possibly explain what I cannot see, it may help with the other 15 or so I am working through.

tks

Hi Edward,

What does it say  after the and? And what does it say after the 'mystery word'

"and ------------ I give my wife (mystery word) ….."

I was wondering if it was a name at all, and was instead the word "whom" ? "whome"?

I see the  'h' (the same as in shilling, above it),  as the second letter of the word

Cheers

Tks, I agree with 'whome'

I think it therefore says:-

All my goods unbequested and ungiven I give to my wife whome
I make my full executor

That makes complete sense - can see it all now you say it  ;D  Sorry it wasn't a (potentially helpful) forename!

Tks again, once you pointed out the 'whome' the rest suddenly became very 'clear'.

Why did they not always name their wives in wills - aarrgghh!!

As executrix, the wife should be named in the probate clause (if you have it).

Unfortunately, she isn't named here  ::)

Proved at Lincoln on 15 August 1637 before Master Peter Walter, clerk, surrogate ... by the oath of the executor etc.
