Where to find details of 1846 marriage?

Hi All,

I believe that registration did not start until later than 1837 in the Isle of Man.

I also read that the parish records were transferred to government departments and copied  - who has these and are they accessible on the net.

I am trying to find the parents of Isabella Faragher and John Gates who married on Sept 8th 1846 in Kirk Rushen.

Any help please!

The records are available from the Registry Office or the Manx Museum in Douglas, but are on microfisch, nothing on the internet.

Thanks for those sites - been to look at them and seem interesting - not sure if I can find my way around the .gov site - keep coming back to the main page - but will have another go.

Think it might be difficult with just the one name at the moment - usual thing - can't find more details until I know more details!!

Still, will be another place to get the map out for - have found a nice old map that Hack has put on here - that my help.

Registration didn't start until 1849 for marriages (1878 for births and deaths).  In the parish registers prior to 1849 you will generally only find the names of the parties, their status (bachelor, widow etc) and whether they were "of" the parish in which the marriage took place or from another parish.  Submitting a request through the Manx National Heritage Museum would only get you a certified copy of the parish entry so won't be of much use to you.

Your best bet would be to submit a request for a census lookup for the 1841 census.  Brian Lawson will do these - see www.lawsons.ca

I couldn't find John and Isabella on the island in 1861 so I checked England and they were there:

From that info I would guess that this IGI entry is a likely candidate for Isabella:

Christening: 21 AUG 1825   Kirk Rushen, Isle Of Man
Father:  RICHD FARGHER   
Mother:  ISAB HARRISON 

But that is just an assumption.  I would get Brian to do a check on the 1841 census for any Isabelle Faragher born abt. 1826 and also to check for the Richard Faragher/Isabella Harrison family.

Thanks again for this information - thought that might be the case with Parish records - but with the census details you found from my other request I am now moving on this one!!

You will see from my website I have included some guess work on this family - I know which is fact and which is assumption - but with your help I can now transfer some assumptions to fact!!
