Pitscottie Easter
« on: Tuesday 25 February 14 17:46 GMT (UK) »
In the family bible I have come across the following:
"My mother died at Pitscottie Easter 23 August 1736 aged 80."

I know that her son who wrote this was James Graham who married Margaret Nicolson at St Andrew's Church on 24/4/1741.  I also know that his father was Charles Graham who was christened on 2/9/1677 probably at Culcross, Perth.  However I have no idea who his mother was.

Any help would really be appreciated.

ScotlandsPeople lists only one female burial under the name Graham in Ceres parish in 1736:
"Augt 25th Ann Russell Relict of John Graham late ffactor for the Estate of Craighall"

Hello Nookie,
SP have Charles Grahame born/baptized 2/9/1677 at Culross, Perthshire. The unknown mother who died 1736 age 80yrs would have been born 1656 making her 21yrs older than Charles. Could you have missed a generation in the male line?
               Regards,     Dod.

Thanks so much for the responses.  I had also wondered about the dates.  However I know that the Bible belonged to James, (huge title page) and also underneath the inscription to his mother he writes of his marriage and then the birth of his daughter and they seem to all be in the same handwriting. No mention is made of a John although the Bible only mentions Charles having one child - (very unusual I would have thought).

However the date of the burial fits in with the death listed, so very possibly there is a missing generation.  Please just enlighten me - what on earth is a ffactor, and would the Estate of Craighall  possibly cover Piscottie Easter as well?

As Factor, John would be overall manager of Craighall Estate. I would expect a man in his position to have a Memorial Inscription if you could track down his burial place.
The town of Ceres lies between Craighall & E.Pitscottie so would have to be a large estate to include E.Pitscottie. Maybe old maps?
Ceres does have a Folk Museum but not sure if they deal with local history or just display old farm implements etc. Will look for their contact details later today.
                Regards,     Dod.

Thanks so much. Onwards with the search!  I found the marriage of John to Ann on 18 January 1687. Unfortunately Graham is such a common surname that it makes searching rather difficult :(

Hello Nookie,
Here are the contact details for Folk Museum at Ceres:
Fife Folk Museum,                    Tel: 01334 828160
          High Street,                             Email: info@fifefolkmuseum.org
          Ceres,
          Fife,
          KY15 5NF.

In reviews staff are described as friendly, helpful & knowledgeable of the area. (Fife Folk Museum Reviews) If they can't be a direct help, they might know of someone in the area who can help.
I had distant relatives who lived at Pitscottie Toll in the mid 1800s. They were all buried in Kemback Churchyard but there will be other burial places in the Pitscottie/Ceres area.

     Famiy Search has the following:
Marriage: Robert Graham & Elspeth Dalglish. 7th January 1677 Culross, Perthshire.
Births:     Charles Grahame, christened 2nd September 1677 Culross.
Anna Grahame, christened 14th June 1679 Culross.
Mrt. Grahame (Margaret?) christened 23rd April, 1681 Culross.
Christian Grahme, born 12th August, christened 18th August 1682 Culross.
David Grahame, born & christened 15th August 1684 Culross.
All children of Robert Grahame & Elspeth Dalglish.

     Also Family Search:
Marriage: John Grahame & Ann Russell, 18th January 1687 Ceres, Fife.
Births:     Thomas Grahame christened 28th October 1687 Ceres.
William Grahame christened 17th April 1689 Ceres.
Archibald Grahame christened 10th March 1691 Ceres.
Anna Grahame christened 23rd August 1692 Ceres.
John Grahame christened 15th May 1694 Ceres.
James Grahame christened  20th January 1696 Ceres, Fife, Scotland.
All children of John Grahame & Anna Russell.

There were 2 children, Johne & Christian Graham, christened 27th October 1652 at Ceres. Parents were Thomas Graham & Issobel Lintoune. First sons were usually named after their paternal grandfather. With John & Ann's first son named Thomas, I wonder if John, son of Thomas & Issobel, is the same John married to Ann.
Certainly Grahams in Ceres before your Charles born in Culross.
     Good Luck with your search.
               Regards,     Dod.

Thank you so very much for all the information.  I know that Robert Graham was married twice - first to Isabel (Issobell) Oliphant in Carnbee and then to Elizabeth Dalgliesh in Culcross. Unfortunately the family bible leaves much to be desired as only Lawrence from the lst marriage and Charles from the 2nd are mentioned :(

I had also picked up the other children from familysearch, but no John was mentioned.  This really is a mystery as I am now having doubts about whose mother died.  I had assumed it was James' going on the entries which followed it, but am really not that sure anymore.

I shall contact the Folk Museum and see whether they have any more information on the Graham's - especially John and Ann.

Hello Nookie,
You probably have this information from Family Search already:
Marriage: Robert Grahame & Issobell Oliphant, 19th April 1670 Crail, Fife.
Robert Grahame & Isobel Olyphant, 9th June 1670 Carnbee, Fife.
This is likely to be the same couple. If the bride & groom lived in different parishes at the time of their marriage, an entry was made in the Records of both Parishes. Usually within a week or so but there is quite a gap here. Either the Minister at Carnbee was a bit lax about keeping his records up to date, or this was the earliest the couple made a visit to his or her home parish.
Like you the only child I've found from this couple is Lawrence born 26th September 1675 at Torryburn, Fife.

Some day the pieces of jigsaw will fit together. Meanwhile, treasure your Family Bible.
               Regards,     Dod.
