Workhouses in Manchester
« on: Tuesday 25 February 14 21:29 GMT (UK) »
Hi All
Im new on here so hope I'm doing it right I'm researching my nan Harriet Annie Southall and she was born 15th October 1901 in the Parish of St George, County of Manchester. She was born at 21 Montague Street. Her mother's name was Rose Southall formerly Smith and her father's name was John or George Southall not 100% sure which as one name is on the birth certificate and the other is on her marriage certificate. Either way her father was deceased when her birth was registered. I was always told  gran was an orphan but can't be 100% sure of it. I am looking for any information to help me find out what happened to my gran between 1901 and 1925 as I cannot find any information on her.I was also told she might of been at one of the workhouses in Manchester how would I find that information out any records from these workhouses if so how would I find them

There is an online tree which states that Harriett was in Swinton Industrial School, Swinton, Near Manchester on the 1911. Unfortunatley we are unable to post details from the 1911 (RootsChat Policy)

I suggest you contact the Lancashire Records Office who hold records for Swinton Ind School.

Lancashire Record Office, Bow Lane, Preston, Lancashire, PR1 2RE. Swinton Industrial School admissions and discharges (1846-8, 1850-1934); indexes (1848-1935)

That is a Harriet Southam (or Southern), age 14, born 1897. https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XWBC-H7L

Hello,

just looking at Rose.

There is a marriage in 1910 at St Andrew's Ancoats
Rose Southall 43 yrs Spinster - father Thomas Southall (deceased)Gardener
George Morsby 45 yrs widower - Baker

I just post this because I can't find a suitable Rose Southall.
John Southall is a gardener in the baptism information as is Thomas above.
You mention John or George being the father of Harriet.
Unfortunately, I think George Morsby dies in 1911 and I can't see Rose in 1911 index.
