Looking for the birth of a Mary in Braintree around 1796.
« on: Wednesday 26 February 14 22:08 GMT (UK) »
Possible surnames include Summers, Fleming and Gradwell, but could be anything.

She married a James Goodwin and their first child who survived was born in 1826 so we assume she was married in the few years previous to that.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

Harrietts 1842 Birth Cert will have Marys maiden name.

Birth Reg;
Harriet GOODWIN, Dec 1841, Braintree, 12 26

WILLIAM SUMMERS Goodwin was Christened 17 Feb 1826, Braintree to JAMES/MARY
I guess this is where the possible maiden name for Mary comes from.

1841 we have;
James 40
Mary 45
William 15
James 13
Mary 11
Charles 10
John 7
Emma 6
Thomas 4

1851 William/James/Charles/Emma/Thomas are at Home + Harriett c 1842

Possible?
Marriage;
08 Nov 1819, St Thomas the Apostle, Navestock, Essex
James GOODWANE
Mary PATIENT
Witnesses, Mary GOODWANE/Joseph PALMER

OOPS differrent Family according to a Tree. 1851 living in Navestock!

I would get Harriets Birth Cert :)

Thanks for all your help. We are in fact trying to find the father of Ellen Valters (mistranscribed as Walters). Her birth record and those of her siblings mention no father.

Her mother was an annuitant and we're wondering where she got the annuity from. It could have been from the Ellen's father, or from the father of ellens half siblings, who we understand died before Ellen was born .... but know very little about the father of her half siblings. (Ellen's mother Sophia valters is a bit of a mystery. There have been several discussions on here trying to figure out who she was)

Because Ellen named her eldest son William Valters Summers Gradwell Goodwin ... And another son, Fleming, we are hoping one of these names is that of her actual father ... by a process of elimination.

So you've tracked down the Gradwell link, and probably the Summers link too. Great!!! .... And thank you!!!

This leaves just Fleming (or possibly something else completely different!) as possibilities for her father, but it could possibly be the maiden name of Mary's mum .... So it would be great if Mays mum could be figured out too ... And hopefully Mary was born Summers.

Pauline

St. Michael the Archangel, Braintree.

Mary Sommers
dau of William and Jane
born October 16th and baptised December 23rd. 1795.

William Summers married Jane Joslin in Braintree in 1790.

Ellen Valters married John Goodwin in Gt. Dunmow in 1861. The space where Ellens father would have been named has been left blank.
One of the witnesses was a William Blackborough Clapham, who in 1861 is living in Gt. Dunmow and listed as a surgeon.

Thank you Suffolk Sue! You've been a great help.  So it looks like 'Flemming' could be daddy!!  Pity I can't find any likely Flemmings on the censuses.

Mr Clapham, born 1826, would have been rather young to be Ellen's father, especially if we assume that all her siblings had the same father and the earliest was born in 1839/40.

Ellen's mum continues to be a mystery ......

Thanks again.

Pauline
