McArthur's on 1911 census look up please
« on: Thursday 27 February 14 13:47 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

I wonder if anyone can help me trace my great grandfather and his brother on the 1911 census?

We have them on previous census's but i'm so far unable to locate them both on a 1911 one.

They are:
Angus McArthur b.1885 Leith
Henry McArthur b.1886 Leith

Both were at the Leith Indistrial School for destitute people on the 1901 census as their parents were both deceased.

Any help locating them on a 1911 census would be greatly recieved.

Kindest Regards,

Pedro

Hi Pedro,

Unfortunately the 1911 census in Scotland is only on the pay site, http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
where you can get 30 credits for £7, and to  search and print the census will cost a total of 6 credits.

There is nowhere to get it free at the moment.

Tom
Scotland - Buchanan, Thomson, Pat(t)erson, Stewart, Ritchie, Tracey
Ireland - Tracey, Conroy, Pat(t)erson.

Hi Pedro

No obvious entry for Angus on the 1911 as you say- I just used 1 credit.

There's an outside chance that Angus went to America - there's one of the correct age departing from Glasgow to Quebec (Montreal) in 1907.  Destination was Montana.

I don't see him in the 1910 US or the 1911 Canadian censuses though.

Hi Tom

Are you enjoying retirement  ;D

A bit here on Angus - i think pedro says he went to Australia:

I know of a few Scots who went to Montana for a few years and then came back.

Hi Tom (Tidybooks) and Gadjet,

Thanks for your kind help on this. Any new avenue or possibility for a location in 1911 is appreciated.

Tom - it does seem to be the only avenue but unfortunately I've joined and searched Scotland's People without any joy.

Gadget - I think i came across the ship departing to America but still cannot link in. You are right he went to Australia, joining the Australian Imperial Force in 1914. One of the AIF records sugests a prior military service in the uk, i think it states 8 years, but have been unable to find any uk military record that would link to Angus, and i have been unable to trace any uk service number. But both spent time in South Wales - Caerphilly, Cwmbran and Swansea.

Kind Regards,

Pedro.

Not sure if you have looked at this but http://www.findmypast.co.uk/ has British Army Service Records 1760-1915 - WO97 - Angus McArthur , born 1884 , Leith.
