BATES - Elton
« on: Friday 28 February 14 09:23 GMT (UK) »
I have a record of a James Bates b1806 in Elton Huntingdonshire, son of a William & Mary? I cannot find a marriage of either a William or Mary from Elton.
There is a christening record of one William b 1729, but the considering James was born 1806, this would make that William 77 when they had the child!
I have made an assumption based on dates that the William could be the son of a Thomas Bates b1745 and a Mary Willimot but again cannot substantiate this.
Can anyone assist please.

I can't see a marriage of William and Mary in Hunts.

As you have queried Mary as being James' mother do I assume you don't have a baptism? What's the evidence for his parents?

The baptism record is England & Wales Christening records 1530-1906.
The assumption of the parents of William is mere supposition based on dates/ locations of persons involved/family name similarities and children of these persons..I admit a grasping ! to prove an Elton line.

The same source shows William and Mary were baptising children in Elton from 1798 to 1806 and William and Ann both before and after those dates. I wonder if she was Mary Ann! But whoever she was, the only William Bates marriage in Hunts was in 1782 and that was to an Elizabeth.

Is this the William who was buried in Elton in 1820 age 56? If so he couldn't have been the son of Thomas and Mary who didn't marry until 1774.

Thanks for all the help but as christening of James gives William and Mary I will have to look at records at Huntingdon when come to UK. Thanks again for the input.

Re James Bates 1806. I have now found that the William and Mary originate from Skellingthorpe in Lincolnshire who then moved to Elton. Looking at relations coming after James there was a link back to Lincolnshire where some family returned before again going to Elton. I shall now be following that line which I am sure is the right direction. Thanks once again
