Riseley Marriages - Linger
« on: Sunday 02 March 14 10:45 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone have acces to the Riseley Marriages for 1915 onwards. I am looking for LINGER marriages in that period. I think two sisters (my grandmother's siblings) married at the same time in 1915 and then one remarried in 1931. I would be grateful for any help as I travelled from West Sussex to Bedford last week only to find the Record Office closed! I was able to find information up to 1812 in the Library but they had nothing after that.

Hello David,  Yes the Beds Archives is closed on Thursday & at weekends. While Bedford library has transcripts up to 1812, marriages for period 1837 to 1901 can be found here....
 http://www.stevengibbs.me.uk/RiseleyMarriages.htm

Marriages for the period 1915 on are only found at the Archives on microfiche. Are you sure that they were married at Riseley? Have you got the marriage index detail? What are the names of these sisters & who did they marry?

Presumably, these 2?

Marriages, June qtr 1915

Bedford district    vol 3b, page 927
Linger, Florence L
Wright, Joseph A

Bedford district    vol 3b, page 925
Linger, Lizzie
Sealey, Frank D

Two pages difference, so unlikely they married at exactly the same time?
That puts at lease 2 other marriages between them; possibly 4 marriages? ;D

I actually went on Monday but they were closed all last week for 'stocktaking'. The BMD entries show Lizzie LINGER to a SEALEY and Florence LINGER to a WRIGHT both married in Bedford District in Apr-Jun 1915 and then Lizzie SEALEY in Sep-dec 1931. I am fairly sure they would all have been in Riseley.

David, I was in the Archives today & had a look up of these Riseley marriages.

5 Apr 1915 Frank David Sealey age 22 bachelor, bootmaker - father Richard Sealey, deceased married to Lizzie Linger age 24 spinster - father Henry Linger, stockman. Both were at Gold Street, Riseley. Witnesses were George Linger & Jessie Clark.

29 May 1915 Joseph Alfred Wright age 28 bachelor, soldier - father John William Wright, decorator married to Florence Lucy Linger age 22 spinster - father Henry Linger, stockman. Again both at Gold Street, Riseley. Witnesses were Ernest Linger & Eliza Jane Laughton.

The Dec 1931 marriage index Bedford 3b/844 of Lizzie Sealey to Charles A S Brooks was not at Riseley nor were there banns at Riseley.

I had a look at baptisms after these dates to see if they had children. I only found Donald John Henry Wright baptised at Riseley on 1 Aug 1920 (born 19 Feb 1920) to Joseph Alfred & Florence Lucy Wright. He was a painter & decorator and they lived at 58A Stony Road, Sheffield.

I also found adult baptisms on 17 Mar 1918 of Sophia Elizabeth Linger born 10 Feb 1875 and of Florence Lucy Linger born 3 Jun 1893, both children of Henry & Eliza Linger, labourer.

Finally burial of Henry Linger on 6 Apr 1925 age 74

Hope that's useful

John

That is so kind. And has raised some interesting points.
I had started to look at these marriages as a distant relative contacted me through one of my cousins, This relative is the grand daughter of Florence lucy Linger and daughter of Donald Wright and had suggested that Florence and Lizzie got married together - obviously incorrect and I will be able to let her know all of the information you have found. I suspect the second Lizzie Linger marriage was a Registry Office one as I can't find a death of Frank David Sealey prior to that second marriage. I thought it might be Riseley as that is where they lived. Finally Sophia Elizabeth Linger was my grandmother. She was born in Keysoe but I think the family were non-conformists so I had given up finding anything. By 1918 she was married and had had 7 children.

Once again thank you so much for your help
