my sussex brickwall
« on: Tuesday 04 March 14 06:39 GMT (UK) »
Hi  - I have a Harry James Roberts born 28th Feb 1875 in Brighton Sussex according to his ww1 Australian military records.  He was a barman and musician.
According to his war records he served 12 years with the 3rd Hussers
I have Harry James Roberts again when he married in Jan 1914 to Violet Chamberlain who died in 1916 and on this certificate it has his parents as James Henry Roberts (publican) and Elizabeth Hanan both deceased.
the last I have of Harry is in 1923 when he is applying for a war pension.
But I can't find any info on Harry besides this -
I can't see his birth, I can't find his parents, I cant see them in any census, I can't see when Harry come to Australia and I can't find his death so far in Australia.
any help would be fantastic
cheers

Harry ROBERTS #3699.....have you accounted for Winifred SHAW, sister-in-law 55 Regent St, Sydney, later Kia Lama, Broadarrow St Penshurst?. Is Winifred a CHAMBERLAIN or a ROBERTS?

Searching for marriages for Elizabeth Hannan there is one in St Pancras in 1872 where a possible spouse is Thomas Edward Roberts.   Might be worth checking further.

Sounded good, till I found them both in 1871.

In Carlton Road, St Pancras,

Thomas Edward Roberts 50,widower ,historical painter b London
Walsh Roberts son 18 unm b London
Elizabeth Hannan 36 unm servant b Middx

They're still around the same area in 1881- with an addition of an 8 year old son Angelo.

I wonder if Hannan could be Hannah?  Clutching at straws here!
Or maybe Elizabeth was widowed when she married James so it is a different surname but her maiden name shows on Harry's marriage certificate?  I don't suppose that Thomas had a convenient son called James?    That would have been a "forbidden" marriage so they may never have married officially.

Thank you for having a go, I would presume that Harry has put down wrong information on his war records and marriage certificate.
On one document on the war records he put down he was from the parish of St Peters, Brighton Sussex, but I could not see a St Peters.  I see that in the right Quarter (1st) in 1875 there is a Harry Roberts born in Petersfield, Hampshire.  But every piece of document I have has in born in Brighton Sussex.
I will keep hunting
cheers
